Manchester United has debunked reports of a plan to terminate Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract over concerns about the latter’s recent attitude.
Note that Ronaldo has been making headlines since the end of last season over the back and forth concerning his future at Old Trafford.
Earlier, a Sky Sports report which claimed that Manchester United might terminate Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract if he does not change his attitude went viral.
However, Manchester United debunked the report earlier today, August 15, 2022. Subsequently, Sky Sports, the British publication which first published this report via its verified Twitter page deleted the tweet.
The botched report must have been generated after Manchester United lost 4-0 to Brentford. After the match, the camera captured the moment Ronaldo walked off the pitch without a handshake or eye contact with Erik Ten Hag, who was at the touchline welcoming players from the pitch.
Ronaldo headed straight into the dressing room as he was obviously disappointed with the outcome of the match. Manchester United was humbled 4-0 by Brentford, the first historic Premier League home win for the club in 23 years.
Recall that before the start of the new season, Ronaldo had reiterated his intention to leave the club. He had reportedly asked Manchester United management to allow him to leave if any elite club makes an offer.
The lack of Champions League football has been reported as the main reason for Ronaldo’s call for an exit. The Red Devils finished in the 6th position on the Premier League table with only Europa League football on the card.
Ronaldo has not failed to play in the Champions League for 17 years. He is the current all-time top scorer in the competition. The five times Ballon d’Or winner tops the chart of Champions League all-time top scorers with 141 goals, followed by seven times Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi, who has 125 goals.
Despite Messi’s poor French Ligue 1 debut last season, the Argentine international will join Paris Saint Germain in the 2022-2023 Champions League.
If Ronaldo stays at Manchester United, he will only play Europa League. The need to secure his goals and prevent Messi from overtaking him on the Champions League goals chart is said to be the reason for Ronaldo’s craving to leave Manchester United and sign for a club with a Champions League ticket.
He has reportedly accepted a 30% pay cut to join any club with a Champions League offer.
Ronaldo did not feature in most of Manchester United’s preseason games. He had left the club for a brief vacation with his family to sort out family issues.
On returning to Carrington, he insisted on leaving the club. Manchester United is clear on Ronaldo’s future at Old Trafford.
They have insisted that Ronaldo is not for sale. The Portugal international still has a year remaining in his Manchester United contract. As the fortunes of the club continue to dwindle, there are still uncertainties over the future of Ronaldo at Old Trafford.
After a 4-0 loss to Brentford, and Ronaldo walked past Erik Ten Hag in disappointment, Sky Sport reported that Man United is considering terminating his contract over concerns about his attitude. However, credible sources close to the Old Trafford club have debunked the report, with Sky Sport later deleting the tweet.
