Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said David de Gea should save Chelsea’s second goal 100 times out of 100.
The hapless goalkeeper committed the error in the first minute of the second half from Mason Mount’s strike which doubled Chelsea’s lead in their 3-1 over United in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday.
The Spaniard was also at fault for Chelsea’s opener by Olivier Giroud in first-half stoppage time. He then allowed Mason Mount’s shot to squirm through him and into the net early in the second half.
Chelsea then sealed the lead through Anthony Rudiger’s tap in from a flick.
Man U later reduced the deficit after Hudson-Odoi fell Paul Pogba in the box. Bruno Fernades convetred the resulting penalty neatly.
Solskjaer reacts to errors of De Gea
Speaking after the match, Solskjaer, who replaced Sergio Romero, who usually mans the post during cup games said it’s just part of football. The Argentine had been United’s keeper in every round of the FA Cup so far this season before the Wembley clash.
“I can’t speak for David de Gea’s confidence but he is mentally very strong. He knows he should save that one 100 times out of 100 but that’s football for you.
“I made the decision to play him (De Gea) and mentally he was ready for it,” added the Norwegian.
Solskjaer also made some surprising changes in the team’s line up, leaving Anthony Martial, Paul Pogba, and Mason Greenwood on the bench, and his team never really got going against a Chelsea side who could have scored more.
Manchester United back in the premier league top four quest
With the FA Cup now over for the Red Devils, Solskjaer’s team will be facing a crucial week in the Premier League as they try to nail down a top-four place and a return to the Champions League.
They can overtake either Chelsea or Leicester City in the top four if they get a win against West Ham on Wednesday. The Foxes lost their last Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspurs, raising Man Utd hope of European football.
“There is no time to feel sorry for ourselves, we have two games this week and then the Europa League. We will get our heads ready and our legs ready and go again,” he said.
Speaking on his surprising selection, the former Molde said Pogba and Martial have played a lot of football.
“So it’s just about freshening up the team but also about giving them the chance to make a difference when they come on.”
