Kevin De Bruyne has been named the English Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Player for the Year for the 2019/2020 Campaign.
The Manchester City star beat four Liverpool players in Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mane, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold to claim the Prestigious Award.
Kevin De Bruyne had a stellar season at the Etihad. Despite City falling 18-points short of league winner Liverpool, the 29-year-old thrilled the league with a plethora of sensational individual performances.
He wrapped up the season with 13 goals while providing 20 assists for his teammates in the Premier League alone.
He scored two goals and two assists for the Citizens in the Champions League before they bowed out in the last eight round to French outfit, Lyon.
The Belgian international is now the first Manchester City player to win the prestigious award after he was voted the best by fellow players from the 92 professional English clubs.
Speaking on the award, Kevin de Bruyne said: “I think it is [the ultimate honour] because you compete against them, they want to win the trophies, they want to be the best,” he said.
“When they vote for you, and it’s everyone who is voting not just a few players, that means you’ve done really well during the season.”
On the Official Manchester City website, head coach Pep Guardiola congratulated the Belgian, saying: “To win this award is an outstanding achievement, and Kevin is so deserving of it.
“To be recognised by other players is the most that any footballer can ask for, because they understand not only what it is to compete against you, but also the level of commitment it takes to play at the very top.
“There have been many great players in this club’s history, especially over the last decade working with Roberto, Manuel and myself.
“We have won many titles, but Kevin is the first to receive this prestigious award. This recognition is also a tribute to all the fantastic players who have come before him.
“We are so proud of Kevin and this will only strengthen what he means to this club and our fans. From all the players, coaches and staff at Manchester City, I would like to congratulate him.”
Since joining Manchester City from Wolfsburg in 2015, Kevin De Bruyne has since won two Premier League titles, four League Cups, and one FA Cup with the Manchester club.
