Joao Cancelo, a Manchester City defender, posted an Instagram Story on Thursday night revealing face injuries; the 27-year-old claims he was attacked by four people in the picture; City said they are “shocked and outraged“ by the event.
Joao Cancelo claims he was beaten by four assailants who stole his jewelry and threatened his family.
In an Instagram Story on Thursday evening, the Manchester City full-back exhibited bruises to his face, claiming they were sustained as a result of the incident.
The 27-year-old Portuguese defender did not specify the location of the attack, but City later revealed that it occurred during a break-in at the player’s residence.
“Unfortunately today I was assaulted by four cowards who hurt me and tried to hurt my family. When you show resistance this is what happens,” Cancelo posted.
A severe cut above his right eye was seen in the shot he uploaded.
“I don’t know how there are people with such meanness,” he added. “The most important thing for me is my family and luckily they are all OK.
“After all of the challenges I’ve faced in my life, this is simply one more that I’ll overcome. As usual, firm and powerful.”
Manchester City issued the following statement late Thursday night: “We are shocked and outraged that Joao Cancelo and his family were the victims of a home invasion this evening, during which Joao was beaten.
“Joao and his family are being supported by the Club and he is helping the police with their enquiries as they investigate this very serious matter.”
Cancelo played the entire 90 minutes in Manchester City’s 1-0 victory over Brentford on Wednesday night, extending City’s Premier League lead to eight points.
In August 2019, he moved to City from Juventus in a big-money deal that also saw Danilo travel the other way.
