The highly-rated attacker celebrated his 22nd birthday by signing a five-and-a-half-year agreement at the Etihad Stadium, following significant speculation of a move to the north west.

Alvarez joins for 17 million euros (£14.1 million), having scored 36 goals and provided 25 assists in 96 outings for River Plate.

The forward will “stay on loan with River at least until July 2022,” according to Manchester City, with the Buenos Aires giants expecting to reach the Copa Libertadores final in October.

Txiki Begiristain, the City director of football, is enthused about Alvarez’s potential. He has already earned six senior caps for Argentina.
