Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund have made it to the knockout stages of the Champions League after they shared points at the Signal Iduna Park.

Man City secured a top spot in the Champions League group despite the barren draw, with Ryad Mahrez missing a penalty.

In the same vein, after sharing spoils with the Premier League champions, Borussia Dortmund have secured their qualification to the next round of the competition with a game to go.

For the second time this season, Premier League champions failed to have a shot on target in the first half.

The first time that happened was in the Champions League, against the same opponent.

Despite scoring two in the second half, including an acrobatic winner by talisman Erling Haaland, the Citizens were effectively held throughout the first half of the first-leg at Etihad.

Although far from a European classic, both teams took away what they needed from the match with a game to spare, wrapping up proceedings in Group G.

Erling Haaland and Joao Cancelo were replaced at half-time. The in-form striker was silenced by former teammate Mats Hummels, while Karim Adeyemi, the man of the match, stopped Cancelo.

It was a dull and less impressive display by both sides as the first half kicked off.

Karim Adeyemi had a golden chance in the 16th minute to put the host ahead with his superb drive into the box, but his attempt was saved by Ortega.

Giovanni Reyna nearly nailed it for Dortmund, but Ortega was again ready with an astonishing save.

Jude Bellingham once again showed his enormous talents in the midfield as he perfectly partnered with Adeyemi to frustrate the visitors.

Another great opportunity for Dortmund came in the 36th minute. It was Adeyemi again with a good cross from the right to Moukoko.

Moukoko squandered that golden opportunity after firing blank in a one-on-one situation with Ortega.

Manchester City only had a clear chance in the first half in the one-minure injury time, but could not convert it.

Phil Foden’s freekick met Nathan Ake who fired a bullet header over the bar.

The visitors ended the first half without any shots on target.

Pep Guardiola made half time substitutions as Manchester Ciry struggled without an attempt on goal.

Erling Haaland and Joao Cancelo were taken off, while Bernado Silva and former Borussia Dortmund player Manuel Akanji were brought on.

The visitors started to make inroads into the game as the second half began.

John Stones slotted Ilkay Gundogan in down the right of the area, but his shot on a tricky angle was well-saved by Kobel.

Then, Julian Alvarez was allowed flying in with a superb first-time strike after a neat set-up from Mahrez but saw his effort saved.

Man City continued to dominate as the second half continued but were unable to create a clear-cut chance.

After scoring nine of his first ten penalties for Manchester City, Ryad Mahrez have now missed two of his last three penalties, denying Manchester City the opportunity to take the lead.

The game ended goalless as both sides progressed into the next stage of the competition with a game to spare.

Sevilla thrashed Copenhagen in Spain 3-0 to boost their chances of making it to the Europa League in the other Group G fixture.
