Premier League side Manchester United are ready to battle Atletico Madrid and other clubs for the signature of Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani. According to reports, Old Trafford could be a potential destination for the Uruguayan star after falling down the pecking order at the French club.
According to the Manchester Evening News, the striker would not be joining United before the end of January transfer window but the PSG star will be offered to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side for free in the summer. United will fancy the chance of bringing Cavani to Old Trafford this month following the back injury to inform striker Marcus Rashford and to bring back the good times to a club that has had to endure slim pickings of late.
The report adds that the main reason Cavani probably won’t leave in January is the £30 million price tag slapped on the player by PSG. He has also started just four league matches and played a small role in the group stage of the Champions League. Cavani has also had his fair share of injuries and had to compete for a place in attack with Mauro Icardi who is on loan from Inter Milan.
Cavani has been a good addition for Thomas Tuchel’s side since his arrival from Napoli in 2013, scoring 198 goals in 290 matches, winning five league titles, four French Cups and five French League Cups. But he has struggled this season for playing time, scoring five goals in 13 appearances for PSG.
The 32-year-old forward’s injuries have not prevented Atletico Madrid from expressing an interest in the Uruguay international. Diego Simone’s side is in need of attacking reinforcements following the injury to Diego Costa in November.
The former Chelsea striker was ruled out for up to three months after having an operation on a back problem. It was learned that the PSG forward rejected a move to MLS club Inter Miami in favour of remaining in European football.
