Red Devil boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that he will be unable to keep all three keepers satisfied next season, as they are all top-level keepers. The club has David de Gea, Sergio Romero, and will welcome back Dean Henderson after a successful loan with Sheffield United.
Manchester United have David de Gea as the team’s number one but has been inconsistent this season with errors in major matches, the most recent was his mistake led to the team’s elimination from the FA Cup semifinal against Chelsea, while the Spanish number one has come under the spotlight in recent matches he still has a good record with 143 clean sheets from over 300 appearances in the league.
However, Sergio Romero, 33, was signed on a free transfer on a three years contract in 2015 as a backup goalkeeper and has only managed 61 appearances with 39 clean sheets but has been a worthy deputy for the Spanish goalkeeper. But the emergence of Henderson will see him pushed further down.
Manchester United loanee Dean Henderson, 23, joined united from Carlisle as a youth player in 2011, he went on his first loan in 2015/16 with National League Side Stockport after that it was League Two club Grimsby Town in 2016/17, while he had another loan spell with League One outfit Shrewsbury in 2017/18, in 2018/19 he was sent to Sheffield United on a two year loan after he signed a contract extension with Manchester United, he helped Sheffield secure promotion to the English elite division for the first time since 2007, he won the Sheffield’s Young Player of the
Year award and the Championship best Goalkeeper with 20 clean sheets. He had over 11 clean sheets and made over 36 appearances in his first season in the Premier League with plaudit coming from local and international media, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed that he sees him as a future club number one. His performance earned him a call up to the England senior squad as a replacement to Tom Heaton in October 2019.
Solskjaer has revealed that one of the goalkeepers will have to be released this summer “Competition for places is important, and we’re looking to have Competition for places, We have Dean, Sergio, and David in the ranks but it’ll be difficult obviously to keep three of them at the club. We’ll see what the decision will be there.”
Meanwhile, Henderson is on holiday after his debut season in the Premier League with Sheffield, while Romero and Gea are both still in action in the Europa League.
“I must be the most privileged manager in the world with the goalkeeping department. They are three top [keepers] and this Europa League has shown how important Sergio ha,s been for us and David has always been performing. We’ll see what we’ll do going forward.”
