The 29-year-old England and United defender Harry Maguire have been struggling for form with both club and country after making another high-profile mistake in England’s 3-3 draw against Germany in the Nations League match on Monday night, September 26, 2022.
Harry Maguire has not started United’s last four Premier League matches, dropping out of the squad alongside Luke Shaw after United coach Erik ten Hag’s tenure began with defeats to Brighton and Brentford.
However, England head coach Gareth Southgate continues to keep faith in the pair on their way to Qatar.
Due to his current struggles for form, Maguire has lost his place in the Red Devils’ starting eleven despite being the captain.
The 29-year-old England national team defender endured another difficult night after making mistakes twice as England prepared for the World Cup with a shocking 3-3 Nations League draw at home to Germany on Monday.
Maguire’s terrible form was once again in the limelight, as he gifted Germany their opening goal after a calamitous few seconds at the start of the second half.
Meanwhile, Maguire was subjected to serious criticism lately, with supporters booing him before Monday night kick-off.
The 29-year-old frightened defender committed two errors that prevented England from claiming the whole three points.
Maguire conceded a penalty with a clumsy challenge on Jamal Musiala. He passed the ball straight to Germany’s Jamal Musiala on the edge of England’s box and then hacked down the Bayern Munich youngster in the area.
The referee awarded a spot-kick after consulting VAR, and the Man United captain went on to lose possession high up the pitch before Kai Havertz doubled the lead for the visitors.
However, Maguire’s United and England teammate Luke Shaw thinks Harry has suffered more insult than anyone he has come across in football but insists that England fans need to accept him as a major part of the team.
Shaw reacted: “I will be honest, it is a tough period at the moment, of course, Harry is an amazing player, an amazing character.
He has taken a lot of stick, probably more than I have ever seen before in football but he never hides away, he is always there,” Shaw told reporters after the game.
Shaw praised Maguire for his unflinching struggles even in the face of myriad cases of abuse.
He said: “You can have people that can hide away and not want to be in the spotlight, but he keeps putting himself in the spotlight, and it shows the strength and character he has got because come on, everyone knows that he is an unbelievable player.
Luke Shaw manages to convince further that Maguire is a great player and all England players and staff are behind him because they still believe in him. He, therefore, urged England and United supporters to accept and encourage the 29-year-old United captain.
He added: “At the moment, the confidence might not be there because it might feel like the whole world is against him, it is tough for him but us as players, the staff we are all behind him because he is a very important player, and it shows Gareth’s trust that he has played in both games.
“Look at the Euros and what he has done, people need to understand he is a big part of the England team and they have to accept it.”
While Maguire flops, Luke Shaw’s absence from the United team has not affected his international form as he put in an outstanding performance against the Germans, clenching his third England goal along the way.
As it stands now, Maguire’s place in Gareth Southgate’s team continues to be challenged with the likes of Fikayo Tomori staring from the bench, especially after another high-profile error.
Meanwhile, Harry Maguire was confirmed injured by England head coach, Gareth Southgate, after the 3-3 draw with Germany and the defender will miss out on the Premier League game against Leeds United at the weekend, while United teammate Luke Shaw would hope to return from the Red Devils’ bench.
