Manchester United left-back, Luke Shaw, says he has a few massive regrets as far as his career with England’s national team is concerned. The England international says he regrets that he has disappointed the head coach of the national team in the past.

The left-back said he regretted that he used to leave the national team camp at will which led him to lose his place in the team for over three years.

Luke Shaw made his international debut on March 5, 2014, when he was still a teenager. The 25-year-old left-back displaced the country’s iconic defender Ashley Cole in England’s squad ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

During the 2014 World Cup, he was named the youngest player in the tournament and was expected to be one of the biggest players in the squad after the World Cup.

Unfortunately for the English star, injuries, hard time at Manchester United during the era of coach Jose Mourinho, and his attitude towards national team duties kicked him out of the Three Lions squad for years.

Luke Shaw remained out of coach Gareth Southgate’s plans until towards the March FIFA international break when the coach decided to invite him back to the squad. The coach decided to invite him to the squad due to his fine form so far this season.

The left-back who has been consistent under coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has scored a goal and provided 5 assists in 25 Premier League games. He has played 36 games in all competitions for Manchester United this season.

Luke Shaw had his day in England’s squad when the country faced Albania in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification match on March 28. He provided an assist in the match that ended 2-0 in favor of England.

He is expected to get involved in England’s World Cup qualification match against Poland scheduled to take place on Wednesday, March 31.

Ahead of the game, Luke Shaw reflected on his negative attitude which forced him to record just 9 appearances for England since making his debut in 2014.

“I have a few massive regrets and I couldn’t stop thinking of the mistakes that I made in the past, especially with England,” Shaw said. “I pulled out of a lot of camps.

“Around that time, I was maybe not in the best condition but I think over the last two years I’ve thought about it so much – that was my biggest regret.

“And yeah, of course, letting Gareth (Southgate) down. I tried to keep in touch with him just to let him know that things had changed. He’s said he’s picked me on merit and how I’ve been performing.

“The past is the past and hopefully we’ve forgotten about that now and can just focus on the future and I want to keep impressing him.”
