The Premier League game between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur which is scheduled to take place at Anfield Stadium later tonight, May 7, 2022, could confirm Arsenal as UEFA Champions League club ahead of the 2022-2023 season.
The Premier League game will kick off at 19:45 and it is a must-win for both the away team and the home team. Liverpool need it to maintain the pressure on first-placed Manchester City. While Tottenham Hotspur need it to brighten their chances of finishing in the top four.
Note that Liverpool are going into the game as a second-placed team on the Premier League table with 82 points in 34 games, a point below first-placed Manchester City.
So far in the 2021-2022 Premier League campaign, Liverpool have recorded 25 wins, 7 draws, and 2 defeats. At this point of the season, coach Jurgen Klopp of Liverpool and his players would not want to give room for any defeat or a draw.
Any defeat or a draw at this point of the Premier League campaign could end Liverpool’s dream of winning the Premier League title alongside the EFL Cup, and potentially, the Champions League and FA Cup.
Due to what is at stake for Liverpool, coach Antonio Conte of Tottenham Hotspur would have to dig very deep to get at least a point from in-form Liverpool tonight.
What is Arsenal’s business in the Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur Premier League tie?
As of the time of publishing this report, all the clubs occupying the 5th spot to the first spot on the league table have four league games to go before the 2021-2022 season ends. Each of the games is very important for the top four teams especially Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
Currently, Tottenham are sitting on the 5th spot on the league table with 61 points in 34 games, two points away from 4th placed Arsenal. This means that a defeat at the hands of Liverpool tonight will leave Tottenham five points away from Arsenal which would make things more difficult for Spurs as far as finishing in the top four is concerned.
Once Spurs lose to Liverpool, Arsenal will fully take the driver’s seat as they continue to push to finish the 2021-2022 season in the top four.
Note that Arsenal’s next game is against Leeds United on Sunday, May 8, 2022. The Premier League game will kick off at 14:00.
Just like how Tottenham Hotspur need to stun Liverpool by defeating them tonight, Arsenal is condemned to beat Leeds United to maintain their lead over Spurs.
If Tottenham manage to beat Liverpool tonight and Arsenal fail to beat Leeds United or allows Leeds to beat them, Tottenham would return to the 4th spot and Arsenal will drop to the 5th spot.
If that happens, it will be a big problem for coach Mikel Arteta who just extended his contract with Arsenal for three more seasons.
On Friday, May 6, Mikel Arteta told reporters that he and his team want to take Arsenal “to the next level” after he extended his stay at Arsenal until the 2024-2025 season. That next level is to lead Arsenal into the 2022-2023 UEFA Champions League campaign. Anything short of that might not be accepted by Arsenal fans at this point.
“We want to take the club to the next level and to compete really with the top teams,” coach Mikel Arteta said on Friday, May 6, 2022. “To do that, we have to be playing in the Champions League.
“We have to be able to evolve the team, improve our players, improve all departments, generate even more connection with our fans, improve the atmosphere at the Emirates (Stadium), be able to recruit top, top talent and the best people for this club to drive this project to that level.”
