The journey of Liverpool football club has ended in the UEFA Champions League as Real Madrid forced them to a goalless draw at Afield Stadium on Wednesday, April 14.

Liverpool were expected to defeat Real Madrid with at least a 3-0 scoreline in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final tie because the Spanish La Liga giants defeated the Premier League side 3-1 in the first leg played in Spain.

However, Jurgen Klopp and his boys were not able to break Real Madrid’s defense in the entire 90 minutes of football. Madrid were also not able to do much in terms of finding the back of the net. Hence, the double-headed tie ended 3-1 on aggregate and Real Madrid scaled through.

The quarter-final tie between Liverpool and Real Madrid is the second knock-out round Liverpool crashed out without winning any of the two legs in 9 knock-out rounds under Jurgen Klopp. The first time Liverpool had it that bad was last season against Atletico Madrid.

After Real Madrid knocked out Liverpool from this season’s UEFA Champions League campaign, the coach of the Premier League side said the club’s priority for the rest of the season is to qualify for the competition ahead of next season.

Liverpool are currently sitting on the 6th spot on the league table with 52 points in 31 games, 4 points below 3rd placed Leicester City, three points below 4th placed West Ham United and 2 points below 5th placed Chelsea football club.

The reigning Premier League champions have 7 league games to play before the 2020-2021 season ends. In those games, Liverpool are condemned to gather maximum points while they keep hoping that Leicester City, West Ham, and Chelsea will drop points.

After crashing out of this season’s UEFA Champions League campaign, Jurgen Klopp said Liverpool would concentrate fully on the Premier League to make it into the top four. Liverpool will continue with the mission of qualifying for next season’s Champions League when they face Leeds United on Monday, April 9, 2021, at 20:00.

Jurgen Klopp said: “I think we are not in a bad moment at the moment; we played pretty well even when it was a late winner against Aston Villa. We played a good game against them, we played well against Arsenal and not too good against Real Madrid in the first leg, but in the other games, we were not bad.

“Tonight, a good game, so we just have to keep going. We have to keep going, we have to keep fighting, we want to be in the Champions League next year but at the moment we still have to pick up more points than a lot of other teams.

“We love this competition and for other reasons, it is very important we are back in it. We can now concentrate on the Premier League and we will. We have to work our socks off against Leeds.”

On Liverpool’s defeat to Real Madrid, Jurgen Klopp stressed that the defeat would not affect Liverpool negatively in their quest to make it back into the top four.

“We are not silly”, Klopp added. “We want what we earn. If we don’t earn 100 percent, then we respect the situation that we don’t get it.

“How I said, tonight if we scored an early goal this game would’ve been a different one – I think everybody knows that but it’s hypothetical, we didn’t. But it has now no impact on the Premier League, apart from that we don’t play midweeks at least internationally – I’m pretty sure Premier League plays midweeks if I’m right.

“So we can concentrate and focus on the Premier League – what we will and what we have to. But it’s tough just because we are still not in the hot seat, I would say, and we face Leeds on Monday, so that’s a tough one.

“What can I say? They are the leader in all physical stats in the Premier League pretty much, so you better run a lot yourself. We have a few days until then, we will use that, and then we make sure we are ready for that.”
