Liverpool have defeated Chelsea 5-6 on penalties to win the 2022 FA Cup title at the Wembley Stadium in London after waiting for the title for over 16 years.

Coach Jurgen Klopp of Liverpool and coach Thomas Tuchel of Chelsea met at the Wembley Stadium on Saturday, May 14, 2022, for the second time in three months for the FA Cup final. Recall that Klopp’s men defeated Chelsea in the final of the EFL Cup (Carabao Cup) in February via penalties.

Just like in the Carabao Cup final, the defense line of the two teams was so tight that the attackers of both sides could not score in the regular 90 minutes likewise in extra time.

However, in both halves of regular time, Chelsea and Liverpool had some beautiful goalscoring opportunities to end the game within 90 minutes but were not clinical enough.

Chelsea’s best goalscoring opportunities in the FA Cup final fell in the hands of Christian Pulisic and Marcos Alonso. On the other hand, Liverpool’s Luis Díaz and Diogo Jota had some good goalscoring opportunities which they could not also take.

During the first half, Liverpool suffered a big blow when the club’s talisman, Mohamed Salah went out injured. Then, it was like an advantage for Chelsea but Salah’s replacement, Diogo Jota was a threat to Thomas Tuchel’s boys throughout the game.

After the regular 90 minutes, the game went into extra time. Still, Liverpool and Chelsea could not score and the game had to go into penalty shootouts.

During the shootouts, Chelsea’s captain, César Azpilicueta gave the club and the club’s supporters a big scare when he missed his kick by playing it on the sidebar. But the club’s goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy restored Chelsea’s hope by saving Sadio Mane’s spot-kick.

Unfortunately for Chelsea, Mason Mount played a horrible spot-kick which Liverpool’s goalkeeper, Alisson Becker did not fail to save.

At that point, the hope was on Senegalese goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy to save another spot-kick from a Liverpool’s player but could not. 26-year-old Greek left-back, Konstantinos Tsimikas, scored the winning spot-kick for Liverpool.

Liverpool’s players gave coach Jurgen Klopp his first FA Cup title since he has been coaching the club in 2015 by beating Chelsea 5-6 on penalties.
