Lionel Messi is still pushing very hard to ensure that Argentina win the ongoing Copa America. The 34-year-old football icon scored a goal and provided the assists that helped Argentina to beat Ecuador 3-0 in the ongoing tournament.
The 3-0 win has qualified Argentina to the semi-final round of the tournament which means that Lionel Messi is two wins away from winning his first major title for Argentina.
Recall that since Lionel Messi made his debut for Argentina on August 17, 2005, the record 6 times Ballon d’Or winner has not been able to win a major trophy with the team. He is currently the Argentine footballer with the highest amount of international appearances (148 games) with 75 goals to show for it.
Hence, the 34-year-old football icon who made his name in football at FC Barcelona between 2005 and 2021, is fighting very hard to make this year’s edition of Copa America the year to finally put a seal on his legendary football career.
His effort so far in the ongoing Copa America has earned him four goals and four assists in just 5 appearances which are unprecedented going by his age and the intensity of the tournament.
“I’ve always said that individual prizes are secondary, we’re here for something else,” Messi said. “We have an objective and we’re focused on that.”
“It was a hard match, we know how difficult an opponent they can be. The important thing is we’ve taken another step forward.”
The performance of Lionel Messi in Copa America has been astonishing because he is participating in the tournament as a player who has no club. The legendary football icon who is regarded as one of the greatest footballers in the world is currently a free agent.
His contract with his long-term Spanish club expired on June 30, 2021, and the club is yet to reach an agreement with Messi’s representatives.
The president of the club, Joan Laporta has stressed that Barcelona and the representatives of Lionel Messi are still having smooth negotiations. He urged the fans of the club who seem unprepared to allow the Argentine star to exit the club to be calm.
As it stands, the future of Lionel Messi is still not certain as a couple of clubs across Europe are still trying to lure him to their clubs even though Barcelona seem determined to retain him.
The speculation that the Spanish football club has prepared a contract that will keep Messi at the club for two more seasons have not been disputed but Barca fans can only believe it when the football icon put pen to paper this summer.
The world will see Messi in action again on Wednesday, July 7, at 02:00 when Argentina face Columbia in the semi-finals round of Copa America.
