Lionel Messi, the PSG talisman, may have been absent from the field for some time, but he continues to set records.

Intriguingly, Messi has surpassed the 300-million-follower milestone on Instagram, becoming only the second athlete to do so after his arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who currently leads the list with a staggering 392 million Instagram followers — the most of any person on the planet.

Messi is now the third-most followed person on Instagram, behind Ronaldo and Kylie Jenner, an American businesswoman and model with 302 million Instagram followers.

However, while Messi has fewer followers than Ronaldo, the Portuguese superstar has posted on his account far more frequently than the Argentine forward.

Messi has 820 postings on his page, compared to 3,219 for Ronaldo, who has posted nearly four times as often.

If we’re only talking about footballers, Messi’s colleague Neymar comes in third with 168 million followers, less than half of Ronaldo’s.

In addition, Ronaldo topped Instagram’s annual wealthy list of celebrities who may charge the most for a sponsored post in 2021, commanding up to $1.6 million (£1.2 million) to endorse any product on the social media site.

Former WWE superstar and current Hollywood bigwig Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson was knocked off the top spot by the Manchester United striker.

According to a report by Hopper HQ, it was a huge upheaval since for the first time, someone other than reality TV, film, and music stars from the United States topped the list, which began in 2017.

Messi was second on the list of footballers, but seventh in the overall rankings. Each post costs $1.16 million.
