The 34-year-old football icon had dinner with his former teammates at a Japanese restaurant in the city before he stormed out alone.
It was reported that Xavi Hernandez invited Lionel Messi to the restaurant for dinner on Monday, January 24, a night before his 42nd birthday. The coach also extended the invitation to Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba who were Messi’s best friends during his time at the club.
Recall that Messi spent over 17 years of his football career at FC Barcelona before he joined PSG in August 2021 after Barca failed to extend his stay at the club due to financial complications.
Also, recall that when Messi was promoted to FC Barcelona’s senior team on July 1, 2005, he met Xavi Hernandez as one of the established players at the club.
He played alongside the Spanish midfielder until 2015 when Xavi decided to join Qatari club Al Sadd. The Former Spanish footballer played for the Qatari club for four years before he was made the coach of the club in 2019.
Xavi became a very successful coach at the Qatari club and attracted the attention of FC Barcelona when they were looking for a replacement for Ronald Koeman. After a series of back and forth, he was named the coach of Barcelona in 2021.
Since he arrived at FC Barcelona, there have been speculations that the Spanish coach wants Lionel Messi to return to Barcelona.
Hence, when it was heard that Messi was in Barcelona to have dinner with Xavi and his other former teammates, there have been speculations that the 34-year-old Argentine footballer might be tempted to return to Barca.
Lionel Messi honored Xavi’s invitation after enjoying football action from the bench on Sunday, January 23 in the league match between PSG and Reims after over three weeks of battling with covid-19 infection.
Though the match was his 12th league match for PSG, the prolific goalscorer in his days at Barcelona has managed to score just a goal in the French league so far this season. He has however provided 6 assists so far in the league.
His poor goalscoring form has continued to push the speculation that Messi might decide to return to Barcelona anytime soon. Hence, reporters who were at the restaurant where Messi had dinner with Xavi and other Barcelona players tried to ask the Argentine footballer if he would return to Barcelona, the footballer did not give any reply.
Aside from the dinner, he had with his former teammates, the only activity Lionel Messi did while in Barcelona this week was to sign Autographs.
