Leicester City Match Abandoned After Medical Emergency

It was a sad episode at Seagrave during A Premier League 2 match between Leicester City U-21 and Newcastle U-21 as the match had to be abandoned following a medical emergency.

A member of Leicester City staff who was live at the match venue had to be rushed to hospital.

A Leicester statement reead: “We can confirm that this evening’s PL2 fixture between Leicester City Under-21s and Newcastle United Under-21s at Seagrave was abandoned due to a medical emergency involving a member of LCFC staff.

“The staff member has been transferred to hospital and we await further updates on his condition.”

A statement from Newcastle added: “Our thoughts are with the Leicester City staff member following tonight’s PL2 fixture.”

Fortunately, a follow-up statement from Leicester confirmed the staff member had been released from hospital and was able to return home

It read: “We are pleased to report that, following examination by on-site medics, the staff member has been released from observation to recover at home.

“The Club expresses its thanks to Newcastle United, to the match officials and to on-duty medical staff for their cooperation, assistance and care.”

The two sides settled for a 2-2 draw before the match was called off and it is unclear whether a replay will be called.

Premier League 2

Premier League 2 was founded in 2016/17 football season for professional young players under the age of 21 assembled by different Premier League clubs.

Championship clubs, including League One and League Two clubs are also allowed to play their U-21 teams in the league but on a Division 2 while the Division 1 is reserved for Premier League clubs.

The two Divisions also operate on promotion and relegation principles. The bottom two teams in Division 1 are relegated to Division 2 while the top two teams in Division 2 are promoted to Division 1.

The winner of Division 1 is decided through playoffs by the top two teams. Their season runs concurrently with the Premier League from August to May.
