England’s Lauren James will miss the Three Lionesses quarterfinal match against Colombia on August 12, 2023, and a potential semi-final of the Women World Cup as the player was banned for two matches by FIFA.

The Chelsea attacker was sent off in the second half after she stood on the back of Super Falcons defender Michelle Alozie.

The 21-year-old attacker initially got a yellow card, but it was upgraded to a red card after a review by VAR, with the Chelsea player being the first Lioness to be sent off under the current manager, Sarina Wiegman.

James apologized on Twitter after Alozie herself responded to the incident, saying she had respect for Lauren James.

The Chelsea forward replied, saying, “All my love and respect to you. I am sorry for what happened.

“Also, for our England fans and my teammates, playing with and for you is my greatest honor, and I promised to learn from experience”.

The England boss Wiegnam claimed Lauren James never intended to step on Alozie’s back, but emotions got the better of her.

Wiegnam said, “It was a moment of a split second, and it was later in the game, so players also get a little tired. She is an inexperienced player on this stage and has done really well”.

James is England’s top scorer in the 2023 Women’s FIFA World Cup, having scored three goals and created three assists in the group stage.
