Paris Saint-Germain’s Sunday encounter against Lille got started in a lightning-fast manner.

Neymar, Marco Verratti, and Lionel Messi worked together to forward the ball to Kylian Mbappé to start the game, and he scored PSG’s first goal just eight seconds later.

It tied the record for the quickest goal in Ligue 1 history.

The only other occasion a goal was scored that swiftly in a Ligue 1 game was when Michel Rio scored in eight seconds for Caen against Cannes in 1992.

Mbappé scored two goals that day, his first being the second of the season. A big day for PSG has just begun. Messi and Neymar both scored goals as PSG romped their fourth victory of the year, a 7-1 bashing of Lille.

PSG is almost surely going to score a lot of great goals this season given its strong squad, but this specific highlight made history.

Though the French league stated that Mbappe’s goal ties midfielder Michel Rio, who scored for Caen against Cannes in 1992 in the same eight-second span, there was little debate against the claims in some quarters.

For instance, French sports publication L’Equipe was more circumspect, claiming that Mbappe’s goal was closer to nine seconds and that it was the fastest goal since Rio’s.

Note that since 1932 when the French league was founded, no player has scored a faster goal than Michel Rio who made 237 total appearances in D1, scoring 29 goals before he retired in 1996.

Mbappé started his professional club career in 2015 by playing for Monaco, where he won the Ligue 1 championship. He was born in Paris and reared in the nearby town of Bondy. Mbappé became the second-most expensive player and most expensive adolescent player in 2017 when he signed for Paris Saint-Germain for an eventual permanent transfer worth €180 million. He was 18 years old at the time.

He is the club’s second-highest goalscorer of all time and helped the team to their first UEFA Champions League Final in 2020. He has won four Ligue 1 championships and three Coupes de France.

Mbappé earned his senior debut for France in 2017 at the age of 18 on the international stage. Mbappé became the second teenager, after Pelé, to score in a World Cup Final at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He also became the youngest French player to score at a World Cup.

He scored two of the goals that helped France win the tournament, and for his efforts, he was named the French Player of the Year and Best Young Player at the FIFA World Cup.

    Personal life

Mbappé discussed his teenage sacrifices for his football growth in a 2018 interview with Time, saying, “I did not have the moments of so-called normal people during adolescence, like going out with friends, enjoying good times.”

However, Mbappé claimed that despite losing out on a “normal” life, he is “living the life he always dreamed of.” After making his professional debut just over four years prior, he had amassed over 50 million Instagram followers.

Although he acknowledges that after initially coming to public attention, his “life has been totally turned upside down,” he claimed to be “happy.”

Ethan Kylian, the brother of Kylian, signed a “aspiring” contract on June 25, 2021, with Paris Saint-Germain that would extend until 2024.
