Real Madrid suffered a significant blow on Wednesday, September 25 as star forward Kylian Mbappe was confirmed ruled out for three weeks due to a thigh injury sustained during Tuesday’s 3-2 LaLiga victory over Alavés at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Mbappe, who is in strong contention for the Golden Boot after extending his scoring streak five goals in the La Liga campaign, was substituted in the 79th minute by Arda Guler after experiencing discomfort.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid Coach Carlo Ancelotti downplayed concerns of an injury scare on the French star stating: “He’s okay. He’s a little sore. He asked for the substitution to avoid problems. He is already very well and so are we.”
While initial assessments had suggested a minor issue, the club’s medical team has confirmed the injury to his left thigh.
Real Madrid released an update on Kylian Mbappe
A Real statement on Wednesday read: ‘After the tests carried out today on our player Kylian Mbappe by the Real Madrid medical team, he has been diagnosed with an injury to the (left thigh).’
Although the club’s statement did not provide a specific recovery timeline, sources indicate Mbappe will miss approximately three weeks, leaving him sidelined for several crucial matches.
The 25-year-old French forward has made an impressive start to his Real Madrid career, scoring seven goals in nine appearances across all competitions, including six in seven league games, since joining on a five-year deal from Paris Saint-Germain in July.
Mbappe’s absence will be deeply felt, particularly in Sunday’s highly anticipated Madrid derby against Atlético Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano.
That means Carlo Ancelotti will need to get his tactics right in relying on other players to step up and fill the void left by Mbappe’s injury.
Real Madrid currently sit second in the table, one point behind leaders Barcelona, while Atlético lies fourth, five points adrift.
Kylian Mbappe’s Lucrative Deal and Golden Boot Ambitions
Following his high-profile transfer to Real Madrid, Kylian Mbappe secured a staggering £13 million ($17 million) annual salary, catapulting him to the top of the club’s payroll.
The French forward surpassed teammates Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham, solidifying his status as one of the world’s highest-paid players.
However, Mbappe’s injury couldn’t have come at a worse time, particularly in his pursuit of the Golden Boot award. The 25-year-old trails Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski, who currently leads the scoring charts with six goals.
Mbappe’s absence will hinder his chances of bridging the gap, potentially allowing Lewandowski to further establish his lead.
What’s next for Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid?
The French star will potential miss out on Real Madrid derby vs. Atlético Madrid on Sunday, September 29.
