Kylian Mbappe of PSG could not beat Real Madrid, it is time to join them

Kylian Mbappe did all he could to help Paris Saint Germain defeat Real Madrid on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, but his effort proved not to be enough.

On the said date, Mbappe followed the French giants to Madrid to play the second leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 with a goal advantage over the Spanish team.

All PSG needed to do was to draw with Real Madrid or probably beat the Madrid team 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu. But two defensive errors gifted Real Madrid the edge they needed to turn things around.

Recall that in the first leg of the round, Kylian Mbappe scored the only goal in the match that gifted PSG a 1-0 home win which they were expected to build on in the second leg to qualify for the quarter-final round.

The first leg game started perfectly for PSG as they dominated Real Madrid and looked like a team that would defeat the Spanish giants home and away.

As expected, Kylian Mbappe got the opener in the 39th minute to give PSG a 0-2 lead on aggregate. But a mistake from PSG’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma gifted Real Madrid their first goal via the boots of Karim Benzema in the 61st minute.

The goal ignited Estadio Santiago Bernabeu and boosted the morale of Real Madrid’s players. In the 76th minute, Benzema scored Madrid’s second goal.

When the spectator at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu thought they were in for a long night, Benzema scored his third goal in the 78th minute.

Before the game ended, Kylian Mbappe scored two goals that were disallowed due to offside breaches. If the goals had stood, the match would have ended in a 3-3 draw which would have been an advantage to PSG.

But the 3-1 win in Madrid ended PSG’s hope of winning this season’s UEFA Champions League campaign. Hence, Kylian Mbappe’s effort was wasted.

How Kylian Mbappe was welcomed at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu

Before the second leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16, Real Madrid tried all they could to lure Mbappe to Madrid since last summer.

Reports claimed that Real Madrid made three different offers to PSG for the services of Mbappe but the French side turned down all the offers ahead of the 2021-2022 season.

On the other hand, PSG tried all they could to extend Mbappe’s contract but Mbappe turned down PSG’s series of offers.

One of the recent reports claimed that PSG offered Mbappe a €50 million per season contract extension but the 23-year-old French star turned it down. The French side also went as far as offering him a deal with a blank cheque but the footballer refused to sign.

Hence, as Real Madrid are desperately trying to sign Kylian Mbappe, the Frenchman has been looking forward to playing for Real Madrid from childhood.

Recently, a report from Spain claimed that Real Madrid has offered Mbappe a pre-contract which means that the Frenchman could join the Spanish giants at the end of this season.

When he was warming up for the second leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16, a clip showed Mbappe checking out Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

Also, when Mbappe’s name was announced before the kick-off of the game, Real Madrid’s supporters at the stadium welcomed him with a round of applause like he was already their player.

Hence, all things being equal, Mbappe might end up at Real Madrid at the end of his contract on June 30, 2022. The fact that PSG could not progress beyond the round of 16 stage of the Champions League this season could help Mbappe to make a decision ahead of next summer.
