Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City does not have a problem with the proposed biennial World Cup which could kick off after the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

The 30-year-old Belgium attacking midfielder believes that the introduction of the biennial World is not a bad idea as far as all the stakeholders in the game are working together.

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger who is now FIFA chief of global football development is behind the proposed biennial World Cup.

The French iconic coach has been traveling across the world, having seminars and meetings to sell the idea of having the World Cup once in two years.

Since 1930 when the FIFA World Cup was established, the tournament is being held once in four years.

The decision to change the World Cup calendar from once in four years to once in two years has divided opinion among football stakeholders.

Some think that the biennial World Cup would reduce the prestige that comes with the tournament. That category of people also argued that hosting the World Cup once in two years would increase the number of games players would have to play every year.

On the other hand, the argument is that the biennial World Cup would help to allow more countries to feature in the tournament. It is also believed that it would spread football deeper into parts of the world where the game has not developed.

As for Kevin De Bruyne, his concern is that players should be given more time to rest. He stressed that once organizers of the tournament can give players real-time for rest, the biennial World Cup would not be a problem.

Kevin De Bruyne said: “At the start of the season, I had a meeting with FIFA and Arsene Wenger to explain to us what they wanted to do,” De Bruyne told news agency Belga.

“To do something like that, federations of all countries, UEFA and FIFA have to coordinate. Everyone has to work together.

“I insisted on a second point: I told them that they had to keep a real period of rest for us, the players, at the end of the season.

“The idea isn’t bad in itself, as long as everyone works together.”

Kevin De Bruyne is expected to lead Belgium to play against Estonia later today, November 13. The World Cup qualification game will kick off at 20:45.

Belgium are on the verge of qualifying for the Qatar 2022 World Cup. They are currently leading the Group E table with 16 points in 6 games.
