Kepa Arrizabalaga’s mistakes as Chelsea’s goalkeeper have become a cause of worry for Chelsea fans across the world but Chelsea’s manager Frank Lampard believes the Spanish goalkeeper needs more support from him and from his teammates.
Since Kepa joined Chelsea from Athletic Bilbao in 2018 for £71 million which is a world transfer record fee for a goalkeeper, the 25-year-old Spain international has conceded 112 goals in 97 appearances.
It is normal for a goalkeeper to concede goals but it is unacceptable when a world’s most expensive goalkeeper like Kepa concedes goals from avoidable mistakes.
The Spain international was at it again when he received a back pass from his defender during their Premier League match against Liverpool on Sunday. Instead of him to shoot it out as hard as he could, he decided to pass it to another defender, and the ball headed straight to Sadio Mane who accepted the gift and scored Liverpool’s second goal of the match.
At the end of the day, Chelsea with their over £200 million new recruits could not fight back nor score any goal. Even when Chelsea had the chance to make it 1-1 after Mane scored Liverpool’s first goal, Jorginho played a penalty kick into the hands of Liverpool’s goalkeeper Allison. The match ended 0-2 to give Frank Lampard his first defeat in two matches.
Though Jorginho missed a penalty kick, the world is more concerned about Kepa Arrizabalaga’s mistakes in between the sticks. But his manager would not want to join those crucifying him, hence, he decided to drum support for him.
“It’s a clear mistake that has cost us,” Lampard said.
“We have to keep working, Kepa has to keep working and he has to have support around him, that’s very clear. Individually players need support, particularly from myself, and I give that to all the players.
“And now we’ve got to try to give him confidence because that’s important. Nobody tries to make mistakes in football, that’s the nature of the game.”
Kepa’s Mistakes are consistent
Kepa Arrizabalaga’s mistakes are dated far back in 2019 during Maurizio Sarri’s era at the club. The biggest or the most historic of the goalkeeper’s blunder happened in the final of the EFL Cup. Chelsea was playing Manchester City in the final of the competition. When both teams dragged the match goalless until extra time, Sarri decided to substitute Kepa for Caballero who was seen as a goalkeeper who was very good at saving penalties.
Unfortunately for Sarri, Kepa refused to be substituted and caused a huge scene in a live match. After delaying the match and frustrating Sarri for minutes, Chelsea’s coaching crew decided to give up and Kepa continued in the match.
To make matter worse, the match ended in a penalty shootout as expected. Unfortunately for Chelsea, Kepa had the chance to save Sergio Aguero’s very weak penalty kick but the goalkeeper allowed the ball to roll through his hands into the net.
Kepa Arrizabalaga’s mistakes have forced Chelsea to start searching for a new goalkeeper. The search became even more intense after the club’s match against Brighton where Kepa allowed a shot that should count as a “shot on target to roll into the net.
The Spain international is very likely to be replaced by Rennes keeper Edouard Mendy who is on the verge of signing for Chelsea this summer. Afterward, the worse that would happen to Kepa is to become Chelsea’s second choice or go on loan since he still has five years on his contract with Chelsea.
