The manager of Liverpool football club, Jurgen Klopp has blamed mental fatigue for the dwindling fortune of the club in the Premier League so far this season.

Liverpool have been having it so tough since the commencement of the year 2021. Since the year began, Liverpool had managed to win only two Premier League games and suffered three defeats.

The poor form has taken Liverpool from the top of the league table to the 4th spot on the league table. Jurgen Klopp and his boys have managed to garner only 40 points in 22 league games.

The reigning Premier League champions experienced their second worse shock of the season when they suffered a 1-0 defeat at Anfield stadium in the hands of lowly rated Brighton. The first stunner at Anfield this season came in the hands of Burnley when the lowly rated club stunned Liverpool 1-0 at home on January 21, 2020.

“For me, the team looked, and it’s long ago since we looked like this, but we looked fatigued, mentally fatigued. That leads to not the best legs as well,” Klopp said after a 1-0 home defeat in the hands of Brighton on Wednesday, February 3, 2021.

“It was a tough week and today we were not fresh enough, and that means then not good enough to break the formation of Brighton.”

“We played against a really good opposition,” Klopp told BT Sport. “For us this week looked too tough, we were not fresh, we didn’t look mentally fresh. If you are mentally not fresh, your legs normally sort your problems, but tonight they didn’t.

“They have a good plan and they deserve to win, but of course we wanted to play better and more convincing than we did tonight.

“I know the guys can play a pass from A to B, but tonight B did not seem reachable in some moments. I don’t have a real explanation for it, other than we had a really tough week, twice going to London and coming here tonight.

“We didn’t create enough. They came through and we didn’t come through.”

    Liverpool are not title contenders

Jurgen Klopp believes Mental fatigue is sinking Liverpool after 1-0 lost to Brighton
Brighton players celebrate their victory over Liverpool on Wednesday, February 3.

After Liverpool won their first Premier League title in 30 years at the end of the 2019-2020 season, it was predicted that the club would repeat the same feat this season.

The 2020-2021 season started fairly for Liverpool and it was looking like the club would successfully defend the league title just like how Pep Guardiola did with Manchester City in the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 seasons.

Suddenly, Liverpool found it difficult to score goals and struggled to win games. It has gotten so bad that lowly rated clubs like Brighton and Burnley can stroll into the Anfield Stadium to win games with clean sheets.

With the deteriorating form, Liverpool’s defender, Andrew Robertson believes that Liverpool can not retain the Premier League title this season. To make it even harder for Liverpool, the club’s next opponent in the Premier League is Manchester City. The match is scheduled to take place on February 7, at 17:30.

“Any game against Man City is a big one,” Robertson said. “As this moment stands, we’re not in the title race. We are seven points behind them and they have a game in hand.

“You have to give [Brighton] credit for playing well. They created chances, pressed us, did everything we wanted to do.

“We didn’t really do anything of note. With a long record of going unbeaten, we’ve lost two. When you don’t show up you don’t get results.

“We’re still a good team. We don’t turn into a bad team overnight.”
