Derby County goalkeeper Josh Vickers has revealed that he lost his wife to cancer after they were just married for three months.
Josh Vickers, 27, who started his professional career with Arsenal, documented his wife Laura’s long battle with cancer on Instagram.
In an Instagram post, the goalie said his late wife undertook several rounds of chemotherapy. The goalkeeper shared the emotional post on Sunday, 24th September, 2023.
He also broke the news that his wife Laura had passed away alongside a picture from their wedding day.
Josh Vickers wrote: “I have written and unwritten this so many times and still can’t find the right words to say and don’t know if I ever will.”
Josh Vickers went on to add: “On Tuesday evening my wife lost her long battle against cancer….”
“Laura is the strongest, bravest and most loving person I have ever met. Even though everything she was going through, she continued to smile, never letting anything get in the way of having a good time and making a lifetime of memories.”
“We have cried, laughed and danced our way through some tough times.”
“I will cherish every moment we spent together from the first time we meet to the moment you peacefully passed. I know that you will be looking down on me and continuing to inspire me every day.”
“Thank you to everyone that has supported myself and both families through this incredibly difficult time. Truly fortunate to have the most amazing family and friends! I Love You Always & Forever.”
Josh Vickers also received support from his teammates, with Martyn Waghorn posting a squad photo with the caption “we’re all with you mate”.
The goalkeeper was absent from Derby County’s match on Sunday night and this was due to ‘personal reasons’.
Derby County also showed support to the Englishman with their warmed up sporting strips that read ‘Josh 31’.
Also the squad subsequently held up his strip after James Collins scored 18 minutes into the match against Carlisle to show further support.
Derby Country took to their social media account to show support for Josh Vickers as they shared an image simply captioned: ‘For Josh’.
Josh Vickers signed for Derby County 13 weeks ago, and he broke the news via Instagram saying he was ‘delighted’ with the move.
The goalkeeper also posted about his wedding to Laura, on June 1st – three weeks before he signed for the Rams.
The Englishman also shared updates with his followers throughout Laura’s tough battle with cancer.
The Goalie previously paid tribute to his wife in 2019 after she completed a grueling eight chemotherapy sessions.

Joshua Anthony Vickers is an English footballer who was born on 1st December, 1995 and plays as a goalkeeper for EFL League One club Derby County.
Vickers was on the books of Arsenal and Swansea City without playing first-team football for either, and made his Football League debut while on loan at Barnet.
He then had spells at Lincoln City and Rotherham United before joining Derby County in 2023.
