The Dacia Arena in Italy turned Jose Mourinho’s nightmare as Udinese pulled a surprising victory with a glaring score margin. The Bianconeri were top of their game but had to capitalize on glaring and unfathomable gaffes by an unimpressive Roma to win the game.

Roma had gone into the match with a superb and brilliant opening Serie A form. They had won three of their opening four games with clean sheets. They defeated Salernitana 1-0 in the opening match; won 1-0 against Cremonese; drew 1-1 with Juventus, and smashed Monza 3-0.

Udinese had lost 4-2 to defending Champions AC Milan in the opening match; they drew 0-0 with Salernitana; defeated Monza 2-1, and managed a 1-0 victory against Fiorentina.

A 4-0 victory over Roma under the watch of Jose Mourinho was least expected by the best of pundits and bookmakers.

Just five minutes into the match, Udinese took the lead through Destiny Udogie’s strike. A disconnect between Roma defender Rick Karsdorp and his goalkeeper had resulted in the goal. Karsdorp had attempted to chest the ball to the keeper, but Udogie raced in and slotted it home.

Before the break, Udinese doubled their lead. Rui Patricio failed to save Lamar Samardzic long-distance, which was a goal.

Robert Pereyra utilized a perfect counter to net the third goal after Udinese escaped off Roma’s high-pressing possession.

Sandy Lovric later completed the rout heaping a thumping defeat on the Serie A giants. Udinese is now fourth on the Serie A table, a place above Roma, who are fifth. The 4-0 loss to Udinese is Jose Mourinho’s heaviest defeat in a Serie A fixture.

Mourinho refused to blame the players for the defeat. According to him, Roma was just unlucky, having to give away 2 goals that stamped the fate of the match.

“Today we were unlucky, we gave away two goals which decided the match”, the Portuguese tactician said.

He praised Dybala for a strong performance, saying the Argentine star was the best player on the pitch in that match.

“I’m talking about bad luck because at the start, we were going strong with the opportunity created by Dybala, who for me was the best player on the pitch”, the coach submitted.

Jose Mourinho applauded the opponents and played down the result.

“A perfect match for them, a well-deserved victory, it’s hard for us but I prefer a 4-0 defeat than four 1-0 defeats”, he added.

Roma will play Ludogorets in the Europa League on Thursday, 8th September 2022, before traveling to take on Empoli in their next Serie A fixture. Meanwhile, England manager Gareth Southgate was spotted in the stands to monitor Chris Smalling and Tammy Abraham against the upcoming international break.
