Jose Mourinho is on the verge of becoming manager of Turkish giants Fenerbahce, and he has requested a certain clause to be inserted into his contract.
Mourinho’s confirmation as boss of the Yellow Canaries is imminent, with the Portuguese said to have agreed a two-year deal with the club.
Jose Mourinho has been out of management since he was dismissed by AS Roma in January 2024.
Reports indicate that the former Real Madrid boss is asking for a special clause to be added to his deal with Fenerbahce.
What Is The Special Clause Jose Mourinho Is Requesting To Be Added In His Fenerbahce Contract?
This clause would give Mourinho the room to exit the Turkish side without hassles should the opportunity to take up another job come to the fore.
Despite having an alluring career and being one of the most decorated managers ever, Jose Mourinho has never in his managerial career tutored a national team.
Based on reports, the 61-year-old wants to be given the leeway to depart Fenerbahce if he is handed the managerial job of the Portuguese national team.
The tactician is believed to regret not accepting an offer from the Portuguese federation when he was boss of AS Roma.
Mourinho managed three teams in his country in the early phase of his managerial career, taking charge of Benfica, Uniao de Leiria, and Porto.
Memorably, Jose Mourinho guided Porto to the UEFA Champions League in 2004, a success that set him on the path to more magnificent heights.
Mourinho had initially guided the Portuguese club to win the UEFA Cup (UEFA Europa League) in 2003.
Moreover, Jose Mourinho claimed the Europa Conference League title in 2022 with AS Roma and also made it to the UEFA Europa League final in 2023.
Mourinho Rejected Portugal Twice
The ex-Real Madrid gaffer revealed in March 2024 that he had rejected the opportunity to handle the Portuguese national team on two previous occasions.
The European nation had first approached Mourinho during his spell at Real Madrid, and subsequently during his time in Rome as aforementioned.
Jose Mourinho made it known that during his stint at Real Madrid, Portugal wanted him to manage them on a part-time basis, which wasn’t possible.
During an interview with Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Mourinho opened the doors for Portugal to come for his services, expressing that he would instantly accept their offer.
The Portuguese said: “My feeling with Portugal is I had the door open twice ‘please come and the place is yours’.
“Once was when I was in Real Madrid and the objective was to be the Portuguese coach part-time and when I realised the president, Florentino [Perez] told me it’s not possible.
“Easy to accept, the second time, ‘do I regret not taking it?’ because a few months later I was sacked in Rome. I don’t regret.”
Portugal are currently being coached by Roberto Martinez, who was handed the job in January 2023.
The European nation will be gunning for their 2nd European Championship title in history, when they play in the continental tournament set to go down from June 14, 2024, to July 14, 2024.
