The manager of Roma, Jose Mourinho was red-carded in the Italian Serie A game against Napoli on Sunday, October 24, 2021.
This happened less than four days after the Portuguese tactician had the worst day of his career when he suffered a 6-1 defeat at the hands of Norwegian club Bodo/Glimt in a Europa Conference League group stage game on Thursday.
After the defeat, Jose Mourinho claimed that the team he paraded against Bodo/Glimt was Roma’s second team which was not as good as the Norwegian side. He also noted that he decided to rest some of his players for the Napoli game because his team could not afford to make a mistake.
The team gave Napoli a good fight. Even though the visitors had 63 percent of the ball possession, they could not score against Roma. The best chances fell on the shoulders of Napoli’s striker Victor Osimhen who hit two of his chances on the bar.
Roma also had their chances as they failed to convert their 13 shorts throughout the game. Hence, the game ended 0-0.
The draw left Napoli with 25 points in 9 games. They are currently topping the league table with superior goals difference, equal points with second-placed AC Milan.
While Roma are left on the 4th spot with 16 points in 9 games, 9 points away from first-placed Napoli.
After the game, Jose Mourinho said: “For me, it was a great game, but perhaps the feeling that I had was different from yours’. I think it was a high-level match.
“It’s never easy to play against Napoli, but we tried to win it. It was a 0-0 draw, not a great show, but I even got tired from the bench.
“I saw great concentration, not fear, but respect for the opponent.
“I think the full-backs are improving, Veretout and Cristante provide good diagonal cover in the middle of the park. It was important to see Zaniolo and Mkhitaryan help during the game.”
Jose Mourinho is satisfied with how balanced the referee was
In the second half of the Serie A game between Roma and Napoli, Jose Mourinho was not happy with some calls the center referee, Davide Massa made. Hence, he agitated against it.
The referee had to show Mourinho a red card after showing him two yellow cards to send him to the stand for the remaining minutes of the game.
When Napoli coach, Spalletti saw what had happened, he applauded the referee. To his surprise, the referee showed him a straight red card for that.
“It was an intense game, I saw tired players, we had our chances, it was a unique game also for the two red cards shown to the coaches.”Jose Mourinho told DAZN.
“I wasn’t happy about the referee’s decision, but I didn’t say a word. Nobody is going home happy, both coaches were sent off, but I think the referee was balanced.”
Jose Mourinho’s Roma will be in action on Wednesday when they visit Cagliari for their 10th league game. The match is expected to kick off at 19:45.
On the other hand, Napoli will be in action against Bologna on Thursday. The league game will kick off at 19:45.
