The manager of Tottenham Hotspur Jose Mourinho says his team lost to Everton because most of his players did not have proper pre-season. He disclosed that most of his players contracted coronavirus prior to the commencement of the new season.
Though the former Chelsea and Real Madrid coach did not disclose the players that contracted the virus, he insisted that the outbreak of the virus in Tottenham‘s camp affected the club’s plans which have led to their first defeat of the season.
He pointed out that the captain of the team, Harry Kane who had to self isolate for two weeks after arriving in England from the Bahamas in August, trained once with the team ahead of the Premier League opener.
Tottenham played their first match of the 2020-2021 season when they hosted Everton. The first half of the caging match ended 0-0. Everton then stole the win in the 55th minute of the match when the visitors’ striker, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, netted the only goal of the match via a header.
Besides the fact that the Portuguese tactician blamed his team’s home defeat on their poor preparation for the season and coronavirus, Mourinho blamed the poor form of his players on the fact that most of them just return from national team duties.
“Moussa Sissoko, a couple and I am not going player by player. For different reasons many of our players didn’t have proper pre-season”, Mourinho said.
“We had cases of positive COVID, we have the right not to say which players, but we had players, we had other players in quarantine due to proximity with positive players.
“We had a player in quarantine because he was on holiday in a country which the government quarantined, we had national teams where many of them went to their team so it was a difficult pre-season.”
Jose Mourinho says he was disappointed
Jose Mourinho and his men finished the 2019-2020 season on the 6th spot which qualified them for Europa League. The team would want to get a Champions League spot this season and probably win one or two titles.
Since he knows the task ahead of him, he could not hide how disappointed he was in his team and had to describe their pressing as being lazy.
“We were lazy in our pressing”, he said. “That is a consequence of bad fitness, bad pre-season.
“Some players didn’t even have a pre-season. Some players had a wrong state of mind. I don’t want to speak about it – I’m not sure about it. I’m disappointed with my team.”
