Jose Mourinho has continued to fight dirty in Italy and the referees in the country have continued to prove to him that they would not tolerate his antics. On Saturday, February 19, 2022, Mourinho received his third red card as the coach of Roma.

Over the years, the 59-year-old Portuguese tactician has proven to be one of the most controversial football managers in the history of the game.

On Saturday, Verona visited Roma to take on Jose Mourinho‘s boys. Roma had to fight from two goals down to draw 2-2 with their visitors. The home team would have won 3-2 if the Video Assistant Referee had not canceled one of the goals of the team.

Hence, the Portuguese tactician was not happy with the general officiating of referee Luca Pairetto and had to react in such a way that the referee had to show him a red card.

Throughout the Italian Serie A game between Roma and Verona, Jose Mourinho had a series of reasons to agitate against the decisions of referee Luca Pairetto.

By stoppage time of the match which ended in a 2-2 draw, Mourinho decided to make a telephone gesture at the referee which did not go down well with the Serie A official.

Not only that, Mourinho grabbed the official match ball and decided to play it into the air before the referee gave him the matching order.

After the referee showed Mourinho a red card, the Portuguese coach attempted to reach out to the referee on the pitch before Roma’s goalkeeping coach Nuno Santos prevented him from doing so.

As he was being escorted to the dressing room, Mourinho decided to make an abrupt stop to shake hands with Verona’s coach Igor Tudor.

He waved at Roma’s fans and then went back to the bench to briefly pass some instructions to a member of his coaching crew before he finally exited the stadium.

How many times has Jose Mourinho received a red card at Roma?

As mentioned earlier, Jose Mourinho has been red-carded three times since he was named the coach of Roma ahead of the 2021-2022 season.

Mourinho received his first red card as Roma coach in August 2021 after he decided to storm onto the pitch during a pre-season friendly.

The second time Mourinho was given a red card as Roma coach was in October 2021 during a Serie A game between Roma and Napoli. In the league game which ended in a 0-0 draw, the Portuguese coach received two yellow cards for dissent.

His third red card was the one he received on Saturday, February 19, 2021, during a Serie A game against Verona.

Jose Mourinho’s official reaction after he was red-carded for the third time

After the 2-2 draw with Verona in which he was shown the third red card as Roma’s coach, Jose Mourinho refused to participate in the post-match press conference.

Instead, he took to his Instagram page to make his official reaction to the outcome of the league game with three pictures.

In the caption, Mourinho wrote: “Picture 1 ball possession-picture 2 direct football-picture 3 I love this person and for them I fight-picture 4 I don’t talk is better to go home and have a nice dinner.”

How is Roma performing under Mourinho so far

Roma started the 2021-2022 season looking like a team that would contend for the league title. To the dismay of many, they started recording poor results constantly that they are now left to fight for a top-four finish.

Things have gotten so bad for Roma that Mourinho and his boys have failed to win their last four matches. They have managed to win four league games in their last 10 league matches.

Roma are currently sitting on the 7th spot with 41 points in 26 games, 6 points away from 4th placed Juventus.
