At 01:20 GMT on January 12, police pulled over the Brazilian player’s Mercedes G-Wagen in Ponteland Road, Newcastle, and took him into custody.

The 26-year-old received a reading of 43 micrograms of alcohol per 100 milliliters of breath, which was higher than the allowed limit of 35.

At Newcastle Magistrates’ Court, district judge Paul Currer suspended his driving privileges for a period of one year.

If Joelinton successfully completes a rehabilitation program, this sentence will be reduced to nine months.

The footballer’s weekly salary was listed in records as being £43,000. In addition to the fine, the judge ordered him to pay a £2,000 surcharge and £85 in expenses.

He claimed that he was persuaded by Joelinton’s repentance after considering his early guilty plea and cooperation with the police.

“You placed yourself in real jeopardy and it could have had disastrous consequences for the lives of others,” he told the player.

“I sincerely hope you have learned from this mistake and we don’t see you in this court again.”

Officers saw the player’s car traveling at a high rate of speed close to St James’ Park, according to prosecutor Jonathan Stirland, and asked the driver to stop.

In one of two subsequent tests conducted at the Forth Banks police station, his roadside breath test result of 50 micrograms per 100 ml of breath dropped to 43 micrograms, the court was informed.

The footballer admitted to investigators that he had consumed two glasses of wine earlier in the evening. He was identified as Joelinton Cassio and charged with living in Ponteland, Northumberland.

Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle United, did not bench the midfielder following the incident, but Joelinton’s attorney warned the court that he would face disciplinary action from the team.
