German Bundesliga club, RB Leipzig have sacked American tactician, Jesse Marsch after four months of appointing him as the club’s coach.

Recall that after the 2020-2021 session, the club’s former coach, Julian Nagelsmann left RB Leipzig to join Bayern Munich. Hence, Leipzig had to appoint Jesse Marsch from their sister club in Austria, Red Bull Salzburg.

The 48-year-old American tactician became the coach of Salzburg in 2019 after his spell at Major League club, New York Red Bulls which is also a sister club of Leipzig.

During his two years’ stay in Austria, Jesse Marsch performed so well that he helped Salzburg to win the Austrian Bundesliga in two successive seasons, and two Austrian Cup also in two successive seasons.

Marsch’s beautiful managerial profile in Austria made RB Leipzig appoint him as Nagelsmann’s replacement, a decision that did not work as projected.

The American tactician was in charge of RB Leipzig for just 23 games in all competitions. Marsch’s team managed to win nine games, record 10 defeats, and four draws.

His inability to give the club a winning spark forced the club to slip to the 11th spot in the Bundesliga, 13 points behind first-placed Bayern Munich.

Also, things got so bad for Jesse Marsch that he managed to win only one game in this season UEFA Champions League group stage campaign which ended the club’s hope of making it to the next round of the competition.

Due to this poor run, Leipzig decided to part ways with him and replaced him with the club’s assistant coach Achim Beierlorzer temporarily.

“It was not easy for us to part company with Jesse Marsch because I hold Jesse in high regard as a person and as a coach,” said Leipzig chief executive Oliver Mintzlaff.

“It is a shame that things did not work out as we had hoped with this setup, and that this step has now become necessary.”

In his reaction, sacked coach Jesse Marsch said he was hopeful that he could turn things around for RB Leipzig, adding that his team suffered from inconsistent results.

“I am very grateful to be part of the Red Bull family and to have been given this opportunity,” he said. “Up until the very end, I remained hopeful that after a troubled start to the season and inconsistent performances, we would find more cohesion and stability as a group and turn our fortunes around.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to do that – after a discussion with Oliver Mintzlaff, we came to the joint decision to make a change in the coaching position.

“I keep only positive thoughts in my mind and wish for the club, the team, the staff and all the fans that RB Leipzig finds its way back to its old strengths very quickly and, given the quality in the team and the club, I am sure that the club will achieve its goals.”
