The former Burnley player, Jeff Hendrick, has undergone a medical at St. James Park after the player turned down a contract extension by Burnley. Though the player didn’t get any playing minutes under Sean Dyche since March, it is believed that his off-field antiques lured Newcastle United to sign him. He was the subject of interest of a number of clubs after becoming a free agent this summer, with European giants like Manchester United and AC Milan reportedly interested in the Republic of Ireland international.
The 28-year-old is a free agent after not signing the contract at Clarets. The player was signed by Sean Dyche in 2016 for a club-record fee of £10.6 million. The Ireland international has appeared 139 times for Sean Dyche’s men with 10 goals and seven assists. In the stop-start season, Jeff Hendrick has two goals and two assists to his name.
Hendrick will become Steve Bruce’s first signing since the collapse of the club’s proposed £300m Saudi-led takeover. Should a deal have gone through it would have made Newcastle one of the richest clubs in world football. There are rumours of a separate bid from elsewhere, with Mike Ashley still keen to sell up. Bellagraph Nova Group chief Evangeline Shen is the one who is said to have her eyes on the club, with reports that contact has been made with Ashley.
