Ivan Toney, a striker for Brentford, acknowledges that after seeing some ‘bit cringy’ social media posts from Arsenal, he had to restrain himself from ‘nibbling’ back at the Gunners.
After defeating Brentford 3-0 on Sunday, with goals from William Saliba, Gabriel Jesus, and Fabio Vieira, Arsenal reclaimed first place in the Premier League standings.
Last season, freshly promoted Bees defeated Mikel Arteta’s team 2-0 in the season opener. After the stunning defeat, Ivan Toney made a mockery of Arsenal by tweeting that he had a “nice kick about with the boys”.
Mikel Arteta used that joke as motivation when Brentford visited the Emirates later in the season, as documented in the Amazon documentary “All or Nothing“.
In the second meeting between Arsenal and Brentford, the Gunners won 2-1. After the victory, one of the goalscorers for the Gunners then, Alexandre Lacazette imitated Toney’s tweet.
The similar tweet was sent by Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes following Sunday’s victory in west London, and Toney believes the joke has satisfactorily run its course.
‘They are a different Arsenal side to what we played before and they played very well, fair play to them, they are doing well’, Ivan Toney said after he was selected for the first time in the England team ahead of the upcoming Nations League matches against Germany and Italy.
"I wanted to nibble but fair play to them" 😂

Brentford striker Ivan Toney responds to "cringey" tweets from Arsenal players mocking him about a tweet he sent last year 👇pic.twitter.com/y6T06K15lZ
The 26-year-old claimed he never gave up on his desire of playing for his country, despite never having represented the Three Lions at a youth level.
‘I never doubted it. I have full confidence in myself, I feel like I have to keep working hard and it makes it that much sweeter when you get the chance,” Toney said.
‘I never played for any of the ages groups, I’ve gone straight into the senior squad. It’s a great achievement, I’m very proud and I wouldn’t have wanted it to go any other way.’
‘This is my opportunity now. I’m excited and confident for it and I’m very hungry. I’ve been working for this moment and it’s here now. I’m not going to let it go by me. I’m going to take it with both hands and make the most of the opportunity I have.’
Ivan Toney
Ivan Benjamin Elijah Toney, an English professional footballer who plays as a striker for Premier League team Brentford, was born on March 16, 1996.
When Toney made his first-team debut for Northampton Town in 2012, he was the team’s youngest player ever. Before joining Newcastle United in 2015, he scored 13 goals in 60 games across all competitions.
He spent two separate loan periods with Barnsley during his debut season at Newcastle, where they won the League One play-offs and the Football League Trophy. He played for Shrewsbury Town, Scunthorpe United, and Wigan Athletic throughout the following two seasons while on loan in League One.
What did Gabriel Magalhaes say to Toney
Ivan Toney’s wounds have been aggravated by Gabriel Magalhaes’ cruel taunts directed at him following Arsenal’s comfortable victory over Brentford.
In the ongoing Twitter war between the players of Brentford and Arsenal, Gabriel Magalhaes became the next player to make fun of the beaten foe on Sunday afternoon.
After Arsenal defeated Brentford 3-0 on Sunday at the Gtech Community Stadium, the Brazilian center-back immediately mocked Brentford players on social media.
And as was to be expected, he posted, “Nice kick about with the boys,” to resume the back-and-forth that had begun between the two clubs in August 2022.
