The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu had one of the best days in court today, May 18, 2022, to the extent he had the opportunity of confirming to the court that he is a Liverpool fan.

It might interest you to know that Nnamdi Kanu, a British-Nigerian political activist who is advocating for the secession and independence of Biafra from Nigeria, has been in the custody of the Department of States Security Service since June 2021.

Note that the Nigerian government first arrested Nnamdi Kanu on 14 October 2015 in Lagos over treasonable offenses. The government forces detained him until 28 April 2017 when he was released on bail.

After he regained his freedom, he secretly flew out of the country. It took the Nigerian government over three years to be able to re-arrest him through the help of Interpol.

It is believed that the 54-year-old separatist leader who claimed to be a Jew has allegedly influenced thousands of youths in Eastern Nigeria to pick up weapons in the name of fighting for independence from Nigeria.

Due to all the atrocities attributed to IPOB and its members, the Nigerian government declared the group a terrorist group, and Nnamdi Kanu is made to answer for all the atrocities.

While the government are working so hard to neutralize the group by taking out its leader using the law, Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyers are working so hard to get him out of prison on bail again.

Hence, on May 18, 2022, Kanu and his team of lawyers were before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja to seek bail.

During the bail application hearing, Justice Nyako jokingly told the court that she was a Liverpool fan and then asked Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, about the football club he supports, the lawyer also said he is a Liverpool fan.

The judge then turned to Kanu and asked him his favorite club, the separatist leader said he has been a Liverpool fan since he was seven years old.

“My team is Liverpool even from age of seven”, Nnamdi Kanu said according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

The judge did not stop there, she urged the security operatives to allow Nnamdi Kanu to watch football games while in their custody.

This means that the embattled activist might have the luxury of watching the UEFA Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid on May 28. The Champions League final is expected to kick off at 20:00 in Paris, France.

Despite the casual approach the judge decided to introduce into the court proceedings, she failed to grant Nnamdi Kanu bail citing how the activist jumped bail in 2017.
