Inter Miami defender Nicolas Freire will be out for the rest of the 2024 season due to a torn right ACL sustained during Saturday night’s 1-0 victory against D.C. United.

The club announced this on Monday, May 20th, with Freire scheduled to undergo surgery at Baptist Health to determine his recovery timeline.

In a social media post, the 30-year-old Argentine footballer admitted that the injury was one of the “toughest challenging moments of his career as a footballer.”

Unfortunately, Freire adds to Inter Miami’s growing list of injured players this season, which includes Facundo Farías, Federico Redondo, Diego Gómez, Ian Fray, and Robbie Robinson.

Inter Miami’s head coach Tata Martino lost Farías to an ACL injury in January and Redondo to a left LCL injury in late March.

In April, Diego Gómez suffered a high ankle sprain during his breakout season, while winger Robbie Robinson has been sidelined since February with a calf injury.

On April 19, manager Gerardo Martino acknowledged that the team plays a game every four days and expressed his intention to assess whether the preseason training regimen contributed to the injury situation.

He then suggested that modifications may be needed as the season progresses.

Gerardo Martino said: “The totality of the injuries have not been exclusively muscular.”

“There’s the case of Federico Redondo with his knee injury, and Benjamin Cremaschi with the Pubis surgery, and more I may be forgetting.

“We have a game every four days. I’m sure as the season goes on we’ll look to review if the preseason played a part in this to modify.”

Other players such as Benjamin Cremaschi, Argentina World Cup hero Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, Sergii Kryvtsov, Robert Taylor, and Leonardo Campana have also faced injuries in 2024.

Despite these setbacks, Inter Miami currently holds the top spot in the Eastern Conference and are leading in the race for the Supporters’ Shield with 31 points.

Who is Nicolas Freire?

Nicolas Omar Freire Gomez is an Argentine professional footballer who currently plays as a center-back for Major League Soccer team Inter Miami.

He began his career as a youth player for CAI and Argentinos Juniors, eventually moving up to the first team in July 2012.

In 2017, Freire transferred to Uruguayan club Torque before being loaned to PEC Zwolle in the Eredivisie.

Nicolas Freirer later had a loan spell with Palmeiras in 2018. Freire then joined Inter Miami on loan from Pumas in Liga MX for the 2024 season, where he made 10 appearances before suffering an ACL tear.

What’s next?

Ukrainian international Sergii Kryvtsov is expected to return to the starting lineup for Inter Miami in place of Nicolas Freire, with Jordi Alba also being considered as an option for the role.
