Inter Miami have confirmed the signing of Sergio Busquets as they reunite him with his former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi.
It was a big day for the MLS side as they welcomed two Barcelona legends on the same day.
Sergio Busquets signing was announced by the club before Lionel Messi presentation ceremony at the DRV PNK Stadium.
The two players, who rocked the game at Barcelona for 13 years from 2008 to 2021, met on stage last night as they set for a new challenge in the MLS. Busquets was also officially unveiled and presented to the club that same night before Messi’s presentation.
Speaking at the announcement of the player as Inter Miami new signing, Inter Miami sporting director, Chris Henderson said the club are happy to have Sergio Busquets joined the team as he is very smart and can perfectly read the game as a midfielder.
He also hailed Busquets for his leadership and world-class talent.
“We’re very happy to bring somebody of Sergio’s pedigree to Inter Miami. He is one of the smartest players to ever play the sport; he reads the game at an unprecedented level and impacts every facet of play,” said Miami’s sporting director Chris Henderson.
“Sergio is a winner, a leader and a world-class talent, and we’re excited to see him represent our franchise.”
While Lionel Messi left Barcelona in 2021 to PSG, Sergio Busquets ended his Barcelona career this summer with reports the Spanish midfield sensation was inconvenienced by the club’s decision to cut wages and blame the lingering financial malaise on high-earning players.
Just like Leo, Sergio Busquets is leaving Barcelona as a legend after spending his entire career with the club winning all domestic and European club trophies available.
He made 721 appearances for the club in his over-a-decade spell, scoring 18 goals, and delivering 45 assists.
The Spanish football legend is one of the most successful Barcelona players in history having rake in 32 silverware in a heroic fifteen years career at Camp Nou.
Busquets won La Liga in his debut season in 2008 with Barcelona and has went on to win eight more La Liga titles, including last season’s campaign.
He has won 7 Copa Del Rey, 7 Supercopa de Espana, 3 Champions League titles, 3 UEFA Super Cup and 3 FIFA Club World Cup trophy.
Sergio Busquets Inter Miami contract
Sergio Busquets is signing a two year contract with Inter Miami till 2025 with an estimated annual salary of $10m.
He has been handed jersey number 5 and will be expected to bring in his experience into the middle of the park for Inter Miami as the club battle to return to winning ways in MLS Western Conference.
According to reports, Sergio Busquets will make his Inter Miami debut on July 21, 2023 – the same day Lionel Messi is also expected to make his debut for the club.
Apart from Messi, Busquets will also reunite with Gerardo Martino, whom he also worked with at Barcelona with Lionel Messi.
Also expected to join Sergio Busquets and Lionel Messi at Inter Miami is another Barcelona legend, Jordi Alba. It will be a harvest of Barcelona legends as David Beckham continues in his Inter Miami revamp.
