Former national team coach of Wales and former Manchester United‘s player, Mark Hughes, said the current coach of Wales Ryan Giggs is on the right path to become the manager of Manchester United. He however noted that Wales’s performance in Euro 2020 which will commence on 11 June 2021 and end on 11 July 2021 will determine Giggs’s chance of becoming United’s football manager.

Ryan Giggs is one of the best football stars to ever play for Manchester United. Besides his being one of the best in terms of his game on the pitch, he is one of the most loyal footballers that have ever played for United. This is so because he spent his entire football career playing at Old Trafford.

Before he officially retired from playing football, the Welshman played over 672 games for Manchester United between 1990–2014 and scored at least 114 goals as a midfielder.

When he was about to bow out from Manchester United, he was given a new contract which made him a player-coach. He served under this capacity during the reign of David Moyes. This qualified him to become the head coach of the club in the interim when the club sacked Moyes in 2014.

A few weeks later, Manchester United appointed Louis van Gaal to become the permanent replacement for Moyes. The club retained Ryan Giggs as the club’s assistant coach between 2014 and 2016. When United sacked Van Gaal in 2016, the Welshman was expecting to be named the permanent coach of United.

Unfortunately for the Welshman, United felt he was not experienced enough to be given such a role. Hence, he decided to leave the club when Jose Mourinho was named the manager of the club.

Between 2016 to early 2018, Giggs kept himself busy by serving as a football analyst on sports media in the United Kingdom. His knowledge of the game landed him the job of Wales’ head coach on 15 January 2018.

Ryan Giggs is in a good place in his management career

Giggs’ appointment as the head coach of the Wales national team did not sit well for some fans of the team because they believe that he was not too committed to the national team when he was still an active footballer.

However, such sentiment has subsided because the national team has been doing well under Ryan Giggs. The former Manchester United midfielder has qualified the team for Euro 2020 and he is gearing up to make history with the team when the European Championship begins in June.

“Ryan is in a good place in his management career. He is on an upward trend,” said Mark Hughes who played alongside Giggs at Manchester United and served as Giggs’ national team coach between 1999 and 2004.

“He is probably more likely to get an opportunity at Manchester United than he was when [Louis] van Gaal left [in 2016].

“Maybe they felt his management CV wasn’t strong enough at that point, but if he goes to the European Championship and does well, then there’s no reason why he won’t be in the frame.”

Ryan Giggs led Wales to suffer the country’s first defeat in more than a year on October 8 when the team played against England in an international friendly. The 46-year-old tactician will lead Wales to play against Ireland today, October 11 in the UEFA Nations League. After that, the Welsh team will face Bulgaria on October 14 for another Nations League match.
