Dutch midfielder, Georginio Wijnaldum has said that it is left for Liverpool to decide the situation surrounding his contract at the club.

Wijnaldum has been in the headline of the transfer rumours as his current deal expires at the end of the season. Jurgen Klopp looked to have signed his replacement with Thiago Alcantara, but the Spaniard is currently injured and will be out of action till the new year.

Georginio Wijnaldum was excellent for Liverpool in their 4-0 win over Wolves amidst contract crisis

The midfielder continued his top performance for the Reds as he was among the goalscorers in his side’s 4-0 thrashing of Wolves on Sunday at Anfield. The maximum points moved the champions to 22 points, two behind leaders, Tottenham Hotspurs, who defeated Arsenal in the North London derby.

As his current deal remains seven months, there are still question marks over his long-term future aty the club.

Wijnaldum has therefore hinted that he is waiting for the club to make the first move with regards to extending his contract.

The 30-year-old has been an important squad member for Jurgen Klopp this season, making ten starts in 11 Premier League matches so far.

It is left to Liverpool concerning new contract talk for Wijanldum

It could be recalled that the Dutch midfielder was linked with a move to Barcelona in the summer – which could have offered him a reunion with his former national team boss Ronald Koeman. That’s still possible in the summer if the former Barca player is till the club’s manager that time, judging from the present domestic form of the club.

Speaking with Amazon Prime after the match on Sunday, he said Liverpool should be asked about his situation rather than him.

In the match which he also won the Man of the Match award, he said he is already settled in the club and the fans still wants him to stay.

“I already said in my previous interview I don’t speak about my contract situation, I speak about the games. The club should speak about my contract.

“There was a connection from the first moment that I came here. The supporters support me a lot but like I said it’s not for me to speak about my contract right now.”

    Scholes wants Wijnaldum to stay

Speaking over the development, former Manchester United midfielder, who is also Amazon pundit, Paul Scholes expressed the belief that Wijnaldum would be best off extending his stay at Anfield.

“Why would he want to leave this place? The way this team are playing – attacking football. He’s playing football every week.

“I know there’s a bit of talk about Barcelona in the summer but it never came off. But why would you want to leave a football team like this?

“Look, I think they’ll win the league again and it’s an exciting team to play in.

“He could be a Barcelona player don’t get me wrong, he would fit into their ways, but the way they’re going at the minute they’re really struggling so why leave a place like this?,” Scholes said during the post-match analysis.
