IIkay Gundogan El Clasico debut ended on a nightmare as Barcelona slumped to a 2-1 defeat to the arch rivals at Estadio Olimpico stadium.
Gundogan close up on a great El Clasico debut as he steered Barcelona to the lead just six minutes into the game after he effortlessly waltz through Real Madrid defense to slot home pass Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Barcelona held on to the narrow 1-0 lead till the first half break but were dealt a blow with Jude Bellingham’s showstopping performance in the second half. Bellingham even the scores 8 minutes after the hour mark before poking home Luka Modric’s flick late in second half to complete the turnaround for the Los Blancos.
Speaking in a postmatch press conference, IIkay Gundogan looked obviously frustrated with the result as he called out the team for not-too-good performance against the fierce domestic rivals.
Gundogan said he did not come to Barcelona to lose such high-profile games as he revealed how the players were frustrated with the result. The German footballer also revealed the players’ disappointment in the dressing room.
“People in the dressing room are disappointed but especially after such big game. I want to see more frustration and anger. And this is the problem. You need to react, be angry,” he said.
IIkay Gundogan joined Barcelona on a free transfer from Manchester City, signing a two-year contract. He has made 11 LaLiga appearances for the club. His El Clasico goal was his first LaLiga goal but he has two assists to his name.
