The points disparity between Paris Saint Germain and Olympique Marseille

Paris Saint Germain are five points ahead of Olympique Marseille who sit second on the Ligue 1 log.

The capital based club as earlier highlighted have lost nine times in 2023 so far and that is more than the total games they lost the previous year.

Paris Saint Germain have lost 6 times in the French Ligue: losing 3-1 against Lens, 1-0 to Rennes, 3-1 loss to Monaco, 0-2 loss to Rennes, 0-1 loss to Lyon and their most recent defeat on Sunday losing 3-1 to Lorient.

They have additionally lost in 2023 to Marseille in the Coupe De France by 2-1, and Bayern Munich over two legs in the UEFA Champions League, 0-1 defeat at the Parc Des Princes and a 2-0 embarrassing loss at the Allianz Arena.

The 10-time winners of the Ligue 1 would be looking to add the top flight title to their Trophee Des Champions already won this campaign.

Paris Saint Germain have had a below bar and an underachieving season in spite of the names at their disposal.

Several seeming scattergun approaches have led them to a position that the Parisians don’t want to be in.

Christophe Galtier slammed his players after the defeat including Achraf Hakimi

PSG boss Christophe Galtier after the loss at their home turf was critical about his players performance and he first went at Achraf Hakimi who was sent off in the encounter.

Galtier stated: “There is no reason for Achraf to be tense and nervous. The second card is very stupid. There was no sign this week that he would be tense.

“It’s a big disappointment and we have to react quickly because we don’t know how many points we are going to have. Our second half of the season has been very very average.”

Moroccan defender Achraf Hakimi has scored 4 goals and provided 3 assists in 26 matches across all competitions.

The 24-year-old has netted 8 goals in 78 matches for Paris Saint Germain since he joined the side from Inter Milan in 2021.

The French tactician added:. “There needs to be a collective but individual awareness. Too many players are looking inward, we have to look ahead. The Troyes match is coming up.

“We have been first since the start of the championship, but we have to finish with victories. We have the ambition to do more.”

He also said that many Paris Saint Germain players have dropped their standards in the second half of the campaign.

Galtier said: “We have too many players below their level in the second half of the campaign.”

The former Lille manager then urged his team to respond as they near the expiration of the 2022/23 Ligue 1 campaign.

He said: “We just have to make the players react. We can’t have this kind of content. Overall, it’s a big disappointment. We have to react quickly.

“We don’t know how many points we will have at the end of the day. Olympique Marseille and Lens are running at top speed in the second half of the campaign. Ours is very average.”

Paris Saint Germain have amassed 75 points from 33 games this campaign. They gathered 86 points from 38 games last term and they are 11 points behind that margin.

It’s left to be seen if they would reach or surpass that tally with five games to go.

Achraf Hakimi who has been in the news due to personal issues and had an early bath in the game would be unavailable for PSG’s next encounter against Troyes.
