The Greek Football Federation has formally requested UEFA’s permission to allow the national team to wear black armbands during their upcoming matches as a poignant tribute to the late George Baldock.
That means Greece will wear black armbands during their Nations League fixture against England and Ireland scheduled for 19:45 BST today and Sunday, October 13 respectively.
This gesture honors the former Sheffield United defender, who tragically passed away in Greece.
What happened to George Baldock?
George Baldock, who represented Greece internationally due to his Greek heritage, was found dead in a pool at his home in Glyfada, a suburb south of Athens.
Baldock’s wife reportedly tried to contact him and after several hours without a response, she informed the owner of the villa in which he lived in Glyfada.
After searching the suburban property, they found Baldock in the pool and called the emergency services.
His sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the football community, particularly in Greece, where he was a beloved member of the national team.
Meanwhile, the Greek Football Federation’s request reflects the profound sadness and sense of loss that has gripped the Greek football fraternity.
The 31-year-old Baldock was not only a key player on the pitch but also a respected figure within the squad and among fans in the country.
In addition to the black armbands, other tributes are likely to follow. A moment of silence may be observed before the game.
Also, Baldock’s image may be displayed on stadium screens, giving players and fans a moment to pause and reflect on his legacy.
