Gonzalo Higuain made his debut for his new club Inter Miami on Sunday night against Philadelphia Union. The match became a Major League Soccer debut he would love to forget as soon as possible. The 32-year-old Argentina international had a chance to give his teammates hope in a match they were struggling in but he did the otherwise.

The former Juventus forward who has played for Chelsea, AC Milan, and Real Madrid was given the chance to play a penalty kick for his new MLS team in the 76th minute. The Argentine striker played it above the bar to kill his team’s hope of coming back into the match.

While he was reflecting on the bitter experience of having to throw a scoring chance away after he has successfully sent the Philadelphia Union’s goalkeeper in the wrong direction, some players of the opposing team led by Philadelphia defender Jakob Glesnes began to celebrate his miss in front of him.

The 32-year-old football star could not take the opposition’s celebration and decided to go physical with Glesnes before the referee was able to bring the situation under control. His club, Inter Miami lost the match 3-0.

Inter Miami coach, Diego Alonso said: “I think that he showed he was in good condition. Logically, he was going to need more game,s and with those games, he’s going to prove more comfortable, he’s going to feel better. He was very eager to play.

“The penalty is a situation that could happen to any player – it could have been him, it could have been another player. We’re happy with his work and the work of the team and we need to continue to aim to perform better and minimize mistakes.”

Inter Miami’s lost to Philadelphia Union has left the club 13th in the MLS’ Eastern Conference, the club is currently on the same point with the bottom-placed team of the conference Columbus Crew.

Gonzalo Higuain joined the MLS side on 18 September 2020 after Juventus failed to extend his contract. In his last season with Juventus, the Argentine football star played 44 games, he scored 11 goals and provided 8 assists in all competitions which were not good enough for the Italian club to extend his contract which expired this summer.

Though it is official that the Argentine footballer joined Inter Miami for free, the duration of his contract with the MLS club has not been made public.
