Giovanni Reyna, Tyler Adams, and Joshua Sargent ready for Bundesliga opener

    United States national team trio, Giovanni Reyna, Tyler Adams, and Joshua Sargent will be playing for their respective clubs in the Bundesliga this weekend.

    They will be seeking to improve their performances at their respective clubs ahead of the start of the German Bundesliga season.

    Reyna and Adams are expected to start in the midfield for Borussia Dortmund, and RB Leipzig while Sargent will be in the forward lines for Werder Bremen.

    The three players, in a chat with ESPN’s Taylor Twellman, detailed what they look forward to the most of the opening weekend.

    Reyna, who quickly came into the senior squad from the under 19 at Dortmund in just six months joined BVB in 2019 from MLS club New York City FC.

    The 17-year-old said playing alongside Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland has set high expectations. They are therefore aiming to break Bayern Munich’s nine-year run as Bundesliga champions.

    “I learned a lot, I came in as a sub and started a few games and I started doing well, so I have high expectations for myself this year.

    “We have a lot of quality guys going forward, but if I can keep on working I can slowly work myself into the team and try to help in any way possible,” Reyna said.

    Timo Werner has to be replaced

    On his part, Adams said Leipzig will have to find other ways to make up the scoring production lost after Timo Werner joined Chelsea.

    “He is the type of player that you can’t necessarily replace perfectly, the responsiblity of the team is going to have to be taken up a notch, we will continue to play for each other, we have a team-oriented style of play,” the 21-year-old midfielder said.

    Speaking further, Adams, who is a versatile cog in Julian Nagelsmann’s machine played as a center-back alongside Dayot Upamecano and won Man of the Match last week in Leipzig’s 3-0 German Cup win over Nurnberg.

    “It was definitely interesting, I don’t know if it was an experiment, I guess we’ll wait until the weekend to see where I’ll play,” said Adams.

    Sargent guaranteed first-team shirt at Werder Bremen

    Having been guaranteed a starting shirt in Werder Bremen, Sargent is expected to play a bigger role in the team’s attack after helping them survive a relegation fight last season.

    The 20-year-old was also impressive during the preseason after battling a hamstring injury last season.

    “We won all our [preseason] games, and I was scoring goals so I feel good, keep doing what I have been doing, and everything will fall into place,” said Sargent.
