Liverpool central midfielder, Gini Wijnaldum could disappoint Spanish La Liga giants, FC Barcelona by joining French Ligue 1 side Paris Saint Germain during this summer transfer window.

Long before now, it has been FC Barcelona that have been pursuing his signature since he failed to get a contract extension at Liverpool but it is now a two-horse race.

Gini Wijnaldum was so close to signing for Barcelona that transfermarkt site reported the deal was 79 percent completed before PSG came into the picture.

According to a report by a Spanish publication, Marca, PSG are on the verge of stealing the 30-year-old Dutch midfielder away from the hands of Barcelona.

The reports claimed that the money PSG placed on the table for Gini Wijnaldum was far more encouraging than the money Barcelona are willing to offer the outgoing Liverpool midfielder.

Initially, it was expected that the Netherlands international would choose to go to Barcelona because of the prestige of the club and the league at large.

It was also expected that the fact that the president of the club, Joan Laporta has confirmed that the current coach of the side, Ronald Koeman would remain at the club might encourage Wijnaldum to join the Spanish side.

Recall that before Koeman was appointed the coach of Barcelona in 2019, he served as the head coach of the Dutch national team. During his time with the team, Wijnaldum worked under him. Hence, he wanted to continue working with the midfielder at Barcelona.

However, the 30-year-old midfielder who is gradually heading into the twilight of his football career has reportedly decided to choose money over loyalty to his former national team coach.

If this report is anything to go by and the Liverpool midfielder fails to go to Barcelona, that would be a huge blow to Barcelona that has been very busy in the transfer market.

Recall that the Spanish side has already concluded the transfer deals with Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero and City’s fast-rising defender Eric Garcia. Gini Wijnaldum whose contract with Liverpool will expire on June 30 could have been Barcelona’s third player from the Premier League this summer if PSG had not gotten involved.

At the time of publishing this report, PSG had not made any official statement confirming their acquisition of the attacking midfielder which means that Barcelona’s fate in the deal is not sealed yet.
