Barcelona‘s veteran defender Gerard Pique said the fate of winning the 2019-2020 Spanish La Liga title is no longer in the hands of the club despite the fact that they are currently topping the league table with three points.

Barcelona football club surprisingly dropped one point on Friday when the Spanish La Liga giants draw 0-0 to third-placed Sevilla. The draw has added more pressure on the load of the manager of the side Quique Setien.

The Catalans were expected to win the game in order to put the pressure on their old-time rival, Real Madrid, which is currently sitting second on the league table with a game in hand.

If coach Quique Setien and his boys had won the match on Friday, Barcelona would have still lead Real Madrid with 5 points pending what would happen in Madrid’s match on Sunday. But now, if Real Madrid win 6th placed Real Sociedad on Sunday, with at least 4 un-replied goals, Coach Zinedine Zidane and his boys will take over the first spot on the league table with one goal difference.

Currently, Real Madrid has 62 points and 35 goals difference with 10 games left to play while Barcelona has 65 points and 38 goals difference with 9 games left to play. The only thing that will make Barcelona remain on top after tomorrow is if Real Madrid loses or draw against Real Sociedad which is almost impossible odds. Also if Real Madrid wins with less than 4 goals, it will leave Barcelona at the top on superior goals difference.

Hence, the title chase is not only in the hands of both Real Madrid and Barcelona but could be determined by what either team do in the remaining games of the season.

“It doesn’t depend only on our results anymore, ” Gerard Pique said after their match on Friday night.

“It will be difficult to win this league. We will do everything we can. But from what I’ve seen in recent weeks, it would be a surprise if Real Madrid drop points.”

So, the race can only be won by the team that wants it the most and that have the depth of players that can go all the way throughout the remaining games left in the prolonged season. Though Barcelona has Lionel Messi who is gunning for his 700th career goal, Real Madrid and their manager look hungrier and could give Barcelona a hot chase until the very last minute.
