De Jong’s projected transfer to United has come to a standstill as the longest-running tale of the summer transfer season continues to take unexpected turns.

Even though Barca is taking its time, United believed they had reached an initial transfer fee agreement of £56.2 million at the end of June.

Although they incurred enormous debt in the process of acquiring Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski for a combined sum of £103.3 million, Barcelona have continued to openly assert that De Jong is not for sale.

According to recent Spanish sources, Barca manager Xavi personally contacted the 25-year-old to persuade him to accept a lesser contract from the Spanish club.

De Jong apparently received a proposal that would allow him to continue working for less than half of what he is currently paid. His challenging circumstance is impeding Barca’s attempts to sabotage Chelsea’s acquisition of Sevilla defender Jules Kounde.

De Jong is reportedly maintaining his position in part because he is owed €17million (£14.4m) in deferred wages as a result of a deal made at the height of the Covid-19 outbreak, according to The Independent.

The Spanish giants have put De Jong in a hard situation, and former United defender Gary Neville believes Barcelona have breached the contract that binds the club with De Jong.

Neville wrote on Twitter: “De Jong should consider legal action v Barcelona and all players should be behind him! A club spending fortunes on new players whilst not paying the ones they have under contract their full money is immoral and a breach. @FIFPRO should be all over bullying like this and stop it.”

De Jong is expected to make about €30 million (£25.5 million) over the remaining years of his current contract, which is significantly more than the €20 million (£17 million) that Barcelona president Joan Laporta is attempting to persuade him to forgo.

Since Erik ten Hag took over as manager at the start of the summer, De Jong has been United’s top transfer target.

The two were coworkers at Ajax before the Dutch manager sold his countryman to Barcelona in 2019 for an initial sum of £65 million.

While United has signed Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen, and Tyrell Malacia this summer, De Jong’s potential move to Old Trafford has been challenging.

Laporta reiterated his stand that De Jong is not for sale on Sunday, adding that the club has not even accepted an offer from United contrary to viral speculation.

He declared, “Frenkie de Jong is our player, and we really like him. We have gotten some offers for Frenkie, but we haven’t accepted any as of yet because we want to speak with him and get a better understanding of his needs. We need to make some things about his condition more clear.”
