The manager of the Chelsea football club, Frank Lampard, has compared himself to his 22-year-old attacking midfielder, Mason Mount, saying the English youngster has done more than he did when he was at his age.
Mason Mount gave a man of the match performance in Chelsea’s Premier League game against Fulham and ended up scoring the only goal of the match which gave Chelsea their second win in seven Premier League games.
After the 1-0 win over Fulham, Frank Lampard told reporters that Mount was outstanding in the game, adding that the quality of the English attacking midfielder was brilliant.
While comparing himself to Mason Mount at 22, Frank Lampard noted that when he joined Chelsea when he was 22-year-old, he wasn’t “blowing the world away” like Mount, adding that at Mount’s age, he was still trying to find his feet at Chelsea.
Lampard joined Chelsea from West Ham United as a footballer in 2001. At the end of his first season at the club, he was able to score 8 goals before the 2001-2002 season ended. From there, he went on to establish himself as the club’s all-time highest goalscorer despite being a midfielder.
As for Mount, the 22-year-old attacking midfielder gained promotion to Chelsea senior team before the commencement of the 2019-2020 season when he was 20-year-old. The youngster became a regular at Chelsea immediately playing in 37 of Chelsea’s 38 league games, scoring 7 goals and providing 6 assists.
So far in the 2020-2021 season, Mason Mount has continued with his brilliant performance for Chelsea as he has made 17 Premier League appearances scoring 2 goals and providing 4 assists.
He is not just big for Chelsea in the Premier League, he has been performing well for Chelsea in other competitions. His consistency this season has earned him 25 appearances in all competitions in which he scored 3 goals and provided 6 assists.
Based on these stats, Frank Lampard believes that the youngster is having a better football career at Chelsea than he did when he was in Mount’s age bracket.
“I thought his performance all round was fantastic; he’s been very good for us, last year and this year”, Frank Lampard said after Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Fulham.
“He’s a big example of what I mean when I mention youth, he turned 22 last week. I came to Chelsea at 22, and I wasn’t blowing the world away in my first year or so, I was finding my feet, but Mason already has so many games under his belt.
“When you look across our front line, you’ve got Pulisic, similar age bracket, Kai Havertz, similar age bracket, Callum Hudson-Odoi, younger age bracket, Tammy [Abraham], Timo [Werner], they are all young.”.
