Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has defended Harry Maguire, saying that the Manchester United captain is being unfairly criticized.
Maguire has been under fire for his performances, with some fans and pundits calling for him to be dropped. However, Keown believes that Maguire is still a good defender and that he is being made a scapegoat for United’s problems.
“I think Harry Maguire is a victim of circumstance,” Keown said. “He’s been made captain of Manchester United at a time when the club is in a state of flux. They’ve lost their identity and they’re not playing well. Maguire is being blamed for that, but I don’t think it’s fair.”
Keown also pointed out that Harry Maguire has been playing with a number of injuries this season, which has affected his performances.
“He’s had a couple of injuries this season,” Keown said. “He’s not been able to train properly and that’s obviously had an impact on his form. I think he’s a good player and he deserves more credit than he’s been getting.”
Keown’s comments are in line with those of other former players who have defended Maguire. Former England defender Rio Ferdinand said that Maguire is “a good defender” who is “being made a scapegoat”.
Maguire himself has said that he is “determined to come out of this stronger”. He will be hoping to do regain his starting berth Manchester United
