Former Chelsea midfielder and Nigerian star player John Mikel has joined the league of football stars to contribute their own quota in providing relief materials to some of the most vulnerable people during the coronavirus lockdown. The Nigerian international footballer decided to assist the government of Nigeria in alleviating the agony of poor households in Nigeria by distributing crates of eggs.

The coronavirus outbreak caused the government of Nigeria like many other nations to declare a lockdown in a bid to stop the spread of the virus. Meanwhile, there are so many people in the country who before now live a little below the poverty line. Many households in Nigeria live below $1 per day, whereas, there was no proper provision for people to sustain on during the lockdown.

Reasonably, this has caused many prominent people in the country to donate immensely to make provision for people during the lockdown and also provide amenities in the fight against the virus. In view of this, former Captain of the Super Eagles John Mikel has distributed about 1800 crates of eggs to poor and vulnerable households in Nigeria.

The former Trabzonspor midfielder disclosed that the charity work was done by members of his team who went about dropping crates of eggs at the doorstep of people’s houses in the country. This was announced via a post on his social media handle.

“Helping people to survive in these difficult times my team today distributed 1800 cases of fresh eggs to some of the poorest areas in Nigeria close to the farm. Let’s all try and help one another in this global crisis in anyway possible,” Mikel wrote on Instagram.

It is worthy to note that Nigeria is one of the most affected countries in Africa having recorded its highest figure of affected victims, 117 persons, in a day on 22nd of April 2020. This brings the total number of affected persons to 782 and over 25 people have died from the virus.
